A new gameplay trailer for the post-apocalyptic FPS Metro 2039, titled Renegade, was unveiled at the Gamescom Opening Night Live ceremony. The trailer showcases new gameplay mechanics, weapons, and combat scenes both underground and on the surface. Viewers were immersed in the eerie atmosphere of the subway stations, which have become humanity’s home in the aftermath of the catastrophe.
“Deep underground lies the ‘Sevastopolskaya’ station – a refuge from the irradiated world above and yet another shelter caught in the grip of the Führer’s propaganda. In today’s trailer, you’ll see this important location in METRO 2039 for the first time,” the game’s Steam page states. “It is here that the Stranger learns crucial details about his mission and prepares for the journey ahead. Who or what exactly is he pursuing? You’ll definitely find out a little later.”

The game is set four years after Metro Exodus, and the world of Metro remains just as bleak. The former factions that controlled the tunnels have vanished, and the survivors now live under the rule of the fascist group Novoreich, which broadcasts threats and spreads its settlements “like a plague.” Its leader, named Hunter, broadcasts threats and demands that “the enemy be destroyed.” The trailer also features propaganda posters and terrified residents.
A stranger hunts down Novoreich soldiers. Brutality takes center stage: the hero dispatches enemies in the dark with melee attacks or silently takes them out with sniper shots. Metro’s signature weapons are crafted from abandoned blueprints and scavenged parts. Players can combine pistols into powerful rifles, as well as customize grips, stocks, and add-on modules.

The Metro 2039 trailer attempted to scare viewers with radiation-mutated insects and monsters leaping right onto the screen. And it’s impossible not to note just how incredibly good the game looks. It’s not just about the gameplay, although the trailer does a great job of showcasing weapon customization, mask cleaning, stealth kills, and elements familiar to the series. The graphics are what impress the most.
4A Games has always paid close attention to the visual aspects of its games, but Metro 2039 takes a significant step forward toward photorealistic graphics. The game stands out for its high level of detail in small elements and soft lighting, thanks to which the open-world locations sometimes look literally like photographs. 4A uses its own engine, developed by experienced engineers. As a result, the game may run more smoothly than one might expect from projects with such realistic graphics on Unreal Engine 5.

The game is set to release in February 2027 and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X.
