AI models are becoming increasingly powerful when it comes to performing cybersecurity tasks. OpenAI recently introduced GPT-5.6-Cyber, which successfully handled 95% of complex queries related to areas such as exploit chains, authentication bypass, and privilege escalation. The company also recently announced the upcoming Astra model, which will have even broader capabilities in the field of cybersecurity.
As even more powerful models are set to be developed soon, some of the world’s largest tech companies believe that cybersecurity defenders have limited time to prepare for the next generation of cyber threats. Therefore, OpenAI has published an open letter calling for a global strengthening of cybersecurity. It was signed by over 100 organizations, including Microsoft, Google, Anthropic, AWS, AMD, Cisco, Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, IBM, Oracle, Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, and others.

These companies expect that, over the coming months, AI-powered cyberattacks will become significantly larger in scale and more sophisticated as models continue to improve. Hospitals, water supply and treatment facilities, internet infrastructure, and other critical services could be seriously affected, as many of them still rely on outdated systems with unpatched software vulnerabilities, weak authentication, excessive access privileges, and other issues.
The solution to this problem lies in giving more cybersecurity professionals access to powerful AI models. This approach will enable them to identify vulnerabilities more quickly, develop patches, and respond to attacks. In the letter, the organizations called for fixing the highest-risk vulnerabilities and implementing more robust access controls. Cybersecurity solution providers are urged to continuously test their products for resilience against the capabilities of advanced AI models and to add AI protection to existing tools.

“We call on leaders across industry and government to bring the full weight of their technology, resources, and expertise to this effort. Put cyber-capable AI in the hands of defenders, starting with the teams protecting essential services. Fix the most dangerous weaknesses, verify the fixes, and share what works so others can build on it,” states OpenAI’s open letter. “Together, we can turn today’s AI advances into lasting improvements in security that benefit everyone. Let’s put them to work”.
They also called on governments to fund cybersecurity improvements in hospitals, public utilities, local governments, and other organizations that lack sufficient resources. Companies developing cutting-edge AI models – including OpenAI, Anthropic, and others – are expected to provide cybersecurity professionals with access to models, funding, training, and tools, as well as practical support.
