OpenAI has officially released its ChatGPT-based programming tool called Codex as a standalone app for macOS. Until now, users had to look for workarounds to work with Codex, mostly through the web interface or command line.

Codex is OpenAI’s native solution for creating and managing AI agents and so-called vibe coding. This is a direct step of the company in the race of AI agent systems, which is currently dominated by Anthropic’s Claude Code, which has already established itself as the market leader in AI tools for developers.

OpenAI describes Codex as “a powerful new interface designed to effortlessly manage multiple agents at once, run work in parallel, and collaborate with agents over long-running tasks.”

The application works with separate threads grouped by projects. This allows you to work on several tasks in parallel or even involve several agents in different parts of the same project without conflicts between them. Codex for macOS synchronizes with the IDE and Terminal, so the context is preserved between different workspaces.

Codex also supports Skills, which are special folders with instructions, scripts, and resources that agents can use to perform highly specialized tasks, such as automated code reviews. Users can either use ready-made Skills or create their own through a separate interface within Codex.

To celebrate the launch of the macOS version, OpenAI doubled the query limits for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers, and temporarily opened access to Codex for ChatGPT Free and GO users.

Recently, OpenAI has been actively increasing the pace of releases: a few months ago, the company also introduced a new browser with built-in AI capabilities, Atlas. At the same time, amid technological breakthroughs, OpenAI is facing serious pressure: analysts predict a loss of up to $14 billion in revenue in 2026, and NVIDIA, which is potentially the largest investor, is reconsidering its intention to invest more than $100 billion in the world’s most expensive private startup.

The official Codex app for macOS is already available for download on the OpenAI website. There is no version for Windows yet.
