OPPO is reportedly preparing to enter the portable smart camera market with a new gimbal camera project. According to Chinese media outlet Blue Whale Media, the company has begun internal work on a specialized product that can compete with popular pocket cameras from brands already present in this segment.
According to sources with knowledge of the situation, the publication reported that OPPO has internally approved a portable gimbal camera project codenamed “Fuyao.” The product is expected to be released in the fourth quarter of this year. According to some reports, the Find X10 series will debut in October, and there is a possibility that the company’s first gimbal camera will be unveiled at the same event. The company is reportedly investing heavily in this category, with expertise in imaging technology considered one of the key factors behind the decision.

The article also notes that other smartphone manufacturers are preparing similar products. According to the publication, vivo started developing its own portable gimbal camera at the end of last year, and the first model has allegedly already passed the prototype stage. Meanwhile, Honor has already entered this category through its ecosystem platform. At the same time, vivo is also reportedly working on a vlogging camera that could debut with the vivo X500 series in September.

Industry analysts believe that the entry of smartphone manufacturers into this market could change the competitive landscape currently dominated by brands such as DJI and Insta360. Their advantages lie in image processing algorithms, artificial intelligence-based processing, control over the supply chain, and an extensive offline retail network. These strengths can help them bring advanced shooting experiences to the market in compact, portable devices at competitive prices.
According to IDC, global shipments of portable smart cameras, including gimbal, action, and panoramic cameras, totaled 16.65 million units in 2025. The segment also showed significant year-over-year growth, with gimbal cameras becoming the fastest growing category. DJI reportedly holds about 62% of the market, while Insta360 accounts for about 12%.
