Spotify is changing its approach to fitness. Whereas the platform previously only offered integration with popular fitness tracking apps, the music streaming service is now introducing its own Running Mode. And as the name suggests, it’s easy to guess what this feature is all about. The new mode lets you create playlists for running that adapt to your workout type and pace, and it also provides coaching tips.

The way Running Mode works is simple: users can choose one of 25 pre-set running presets and then further customize their workout. You can select a workout pattern (interval, steady, or pyramid), set its duration, specify a target pace in beats per minute, and choose what music you’d like to listen to. Once the settings are configured, Spotify uses its built-in AI to generate a session based on the entered parameters.

“Running Mode gives you personalized music, matches beats to your selected tempo, and seamlessly moves through tracks for a more fluid, motivating soundtrack,” the company says in its blog.

The mode also offers coaching support. And while using it is optional, Running Mode can play English-language voice prompts throughout your workout. This means that Spotify will provide recommendations and words of encouragement over the music the user is listening to. If you already have an app with voice prompts, you should turn off the Running Mode coach so that the prompts don’t overlap.
Spotify reported that after the launch of the AI tool Prompted Playlists, which allows users to create playlists simply by entering a text prompt, fitness-related queries have become one of the most popular use cases for this feature. Running Mode complements the content already available on the platform, including Peloton classes and videos featuring original workouts.
