There are several obstacles standing in the way of a truly bezel-less design, including manufacturing complexity and high costs. However, manufacturers aren’t giving up on this idea. For example, TECNO has unveiled its first concept that comes as close as possible to this goal. It showcased an impressive prototype capable of completely changing our perception of how such devices should look and feel. It certainly looks spectacular, but will it ever make it to mass production? Most likely not.

It’s one thing to make the bezels very thin, and quite another to eliminate them entirely. This is exactly what TECNO has managed to achieve with its new concept. The company claims that its new model features a display with 0 mm bezels, and we’ll most likely get to see it at IFA 2026. In the published images, the black bezels around the display are practically invisible, suggesting that TECNO has truly managed to achieve the nearly impossible – and in doing so, has beaten Apple to the punch. According to insiders, Apple will unveil the iPhone 20 Pro and iPhone 20 Pro Max only next year, and these devices will feature a notch-free front glass panel with curved edges.

Creating a truly bezel-less display is a much more complex task than it might seem. According to TECNO, to completely eliminate the bezels, the company had to employ advanced technologies in internal layout, structural design, and new assembly methods. In addition, the company decided to take a jab at Apple by comparing its concept smartphone to the iPhone 17 Pro. As you can see, the difference between the two devices is literally striking.
It’s also easy to imagine just how expensive a smartphone with 0 mm bezels would be for the end consumer. This is yet another reason why no such concept has made it to mass production yet. To achieve a completely bezel-less design, TECNO also used an under-display front-facing camera. Although this solution brings the company closer to its goal, its main drawback remains a reduction in image quality.
The Chinese manufacturer has long been experimenting with similar concepts, but none of them have ever gone into mass production. For example, the SPARK Slim was thinner than the Galaxy S25 Edge, yet it was equipped with a significantly larger battery. Another example is the Phantom Ultimate 2 – an ambitious attempt to create an innovative foldable smartphone with two hinges – but it, too, never made it to consumers.

So this bezel-less concept may, unfortunately, suffer the same fate, unless another manufacturer finds a way to significantly reduce manufacturing costs.
