Unihertz has unveiled its latest rugged device under its 8849 brand – the Tank 5 Pro. The main feature of this new model is a built-in thermal imaging camera based on the FLIR Lepton 3.1R module, a first for mobile phones. A key feature of this sensor is its wide-angle optics with a 95-degree field of view, which is significantly wider than the 57 degrees found in previous models. The sensor has a resolution of 0.05 megapixels, or 160×120 pixels.

The smartphone is powered by the near-flagship Mediatek Dimensity 9400e chipset (up to 2.5 million AnTuTu points), complemented by top-of-the-line LPDDR5X/UFS 4.0 memory. They didn’t skimp on memory either – 18 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, with expandable storage. The device is powered by a massive 17,600 mAh battery, which charges via a 120-watt power adapter and supports 25-watt reverse charging.

In terms of connectivity, the new model offers Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, eSIM, an IR port, NFC, and high-speed USB 3.2 with DisplayPort 1.4 support. The front features a 6.73-inch AMOLED display with 2K resolution (3200×1440), a 120 Hz refresh rate, a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, and flicker-free technology. In addition to the thermal camera, the rear houses three 50-megapixel cameras: a main Samsung GN1 sensor (without OIS), an Omnivision OV50D telephoto lens, and a “night vision module” based on the same sensor.

In addition, the body features a bright flashlight, an SOS signal light, a 3.5-mm headphone jack, and a DLP projector with a resolution of 2048×1080. The manufacturer promises that a single battery charge will last for 5 hours of projector operation at maximum brightness. The phone is dust- and water-resistant to IP69K standards, but it does not have the “military-grade” MIL-STD-810H certification. The model measures 177.1×87×33.8 mm and weighs 715 g.

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the 8849 Tank 5 Pro is set at $1,199.
