It may become much easier to say goodbye to celebrity-driven YouTube deepfakes thanks to the platform’s new steps to combat fake content. Generative artificial intelligence is capable of performing many tasks, from answering questions to creating interactive simulations. At the same time, one of its problematic aspects is the ability to recreate the appearance of people without their consent, which has recently become a serious challenge. To better protect users from such risks, the platform is expanding the functionality of the similarity detection tool.

In its blog post, YouTube notes that the technology will now be available to representatives of the entertainment industry. This includes talent agencies, management companies, and celebrities themselves. Expanding access to the tool can significantly affect the situation with celebrity deepfakes and help reduce their number on the platform.

For those who are not familiar with this feature, its principle of operation is similar to the Content ID system. However, instead of searching for protected content, it analyzes videos on the platform and identifies materials created with the help of AI that use the appearance or voice of a particular person. If a user finds videos where their image is used without permission, they can request its removal.
This feature was first introduced in 2024, when a limited number of users were able to flag and request the removal of content that imitated their face or voice. At the beginning of this year, the functionality was extended to civil servants, journalists, and political candidates, expanding the range of those who can protect themselves from the use of diplomatic fakes.
