Xiaomi is confidently deepening its presence in the automotive industry by opening a new research and development center in Europe. This became known during the Beijing Auto Show, where the company’s CEO Lei Jun revealed the details of the project and its importance for strengthening the automotive division. The new division is focused on performance engineering, premium design and advanced technologies. This is not a simple business expansion, but a strategic move aimed at attracting international expertise and raising the level of the brand’s future vehicles.

The center is headed by Rudolf Dittrich, known for his involvement in the development of the BMW M4 GT3. He is joined by Klaus Dieter Groll, who is responsible for vehicle dynamics and has experience working on many BMW models, including the 3 Series, 4 Series, Z4, X5, X6, and X7. The design team has also been supplemented by specialists from such well-known companies as Porsche, Lamborghini, and Mercedes-Benz. This composition gives Xiaomi access to competencies that are usually concentrated within long-established automakers.
This team is already involved in working on specific products, not just in long-term planning. The first model to appear under the influence of the European center is the Xiaomi YU7 GT, expected to be released at the end of May. The company reportedly aims to improve the driving experience, dynamic performance, and overall level of finish. With the involvement of engineers with experience in performance and luxury, Xiaomi is trying to close the gap with more established competitors. In the long term, the brand plans to not only match but surpass its rivals in this segment.

The opening of the European base is a clear indication of Xiaomi’s new guidelines. The company no longer limits development to one region, but instead brings together talent from around the world to improve the quality of both design and engineering solutions. This move reflects a larger ambition: Xiaomi wants to compete not only in the technological dimension, but also in terms of controllability and premium.
