CD Projekt RED has been talking about a new game set in The Witcher universe for many years, and it was officially announced a few years ago. The developer has yet to properly showcase the game, but today it made an interesting announcement that may raise some expectations among fans.

Today, in a message to fans, CD Projekt RED Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski announced that the studio plans to release The Witcher IV in 2028. That date is still a long way off, but he asked the community to “let the team cook,” adding that “it will be worth the wait.”

“We have more than 500 incredibly talented developers working to create something truly special for you,” added Nowakowski. “The Witcher IV features a huge and immersive open world, intense and action-packed gameplay and a deep impactful story that we hope will stay with you for a long time. Simply put, this is our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date.”

Today’s announcement is part of a broader announcement regarding the company’s participation in Gamescom. At the event, CD Projekt RED will unveil the upcoming “Songs of the Past” expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for the first time. It will be presented as an announcement during the Gamescom Opening Night Live ceremony on August 25, as well as through playable demos at the main event’s exhibition area in Hall 8.

Announced earlier this year, the unexpected third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – which is now ten years old – will bring Geralt of Rivia back so that players can experience an entirely new adventure in the popular fantasy universe. The expansion is scheduled for release in 2027 and may offer fans a story that serves as a bridge between this game and the upcoming The Witcher IV, perhaps laying the groundwork for a new protagonist’s journey.
