Sony has announced that PlayStation will transition entirely to a digital format – production of disc-based game versions will cease as of January 2028. After that date, new games will only be available in digital format through the PlayStation Store and from retailers.

Sony explained that this decision was a response to “shifts in consumer preferences,” as digital sales have come to significantly outpace physical sales. Last year, physical game sales accounted for only 3% of PlayStation’s revenue, and the fact that the PS5 Pro debuted in 2024 without a disc drive was a pretty clear signal of the company’s future direction.

It is noted that this strategic shift will not affect physical games that have already been released or are scheduled for release by January 2028; however, the consequences of this decision will be significant. The used video game market will likely take a serious hit if users can no longer sell or trade in unwanted PS5 games. Retailers are also likely to feel the negative effects.

Signs of this trend were already evident when Rockstar announced it would discontinue disc versions of GTA IV, and today’s news finally dispels any hopes that this was an isolated incident. Physical discs may be more convenient for consumers and those who want to preserve their games, but the economic advantages of an all-digital model for companies like Sony are clear. Xbox has been gradually moving away from physical media for quite some time, and even Nintendo – which still leads in sales of physical game copies – appears to also be encouraging users to switch to the digital format thanks to lower prices and game-key cards, which do not contain the full game.

Sony’s move away from discs isn’t the only news related to the console. The company also announced the closure of the PlayStation Store for the PS3 and PS Vita. “The PlayStation Store on the PS3 will be shut down in select markets starting this year, and next year the service will be shut down globally for the PS3 and PS Vita,” the company noted in a blog post. After that, it will no longer be possible to purchase new games or other content for these platforms, although Sony added that to ease the transition, players will still be able to download previously purchased content for some time after the shutdown date.

“We understand that this news may disappoint PS3 and PS Vita players, for whom this generation of games holds a special place in their hearts,” the company added. “The PS3 and PS Vita represent an important era in PlayStation history, so this was not an easy decision for us to make.”
