After several months of rumors and speculation, it was officially confirmed in June that GTA VI will not be released on physical discs for either the PS5 or the Xbox Series X|S. All retail copies of the game will include only a download code. On its support website, Rockstar Games announced that the retail version of GTA VI will be available in stores starting November 12 and provided details on how the download code will work. This explanation brought a rare perk for Xbox Series X|S users.

“The code for the digital download of Grand Theft Auto VI works differently depending on the platform and country of purchase,” wrote representatives of Rockstar Games on the support website. “We recommend purchasing and playing the game through a retailer located in the country where your platform account is registered to avoid potential activation issues.”

GTA VI codes for Xbox will not be region-locked, while codes for PlayStation 5 will be region-locked due to the way the PlayStation Network operates. Codes purchased in the countries listed below can only be activated on accounts registered in the corresponding regions:
- LATAM: Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay
- North America: Canada, United States
- Korea: South Korea
- Japan: In Japan, product codes will expire 170 days after the date of issuance, i.e., after the release date of November 19, 2026, in accordance with local regulations
- United Kingdom: United Kingdom
- Saudi Arabia and the UAE: Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates
- Other Asian countries: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand
- Other countries in the EMEA and Asia regions: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine.

At the same time, Rockstar Games failed to mention one important point, although this is only partly a consequence of its decision to abandon physical copies. Many PlayStation 5 owners will not be able to play GTA VI unless they use certain workarounds, such as creating a PlayStation Network account in a different region. And according to the EULA, this violates the terms of service and could result in the account being suspended.
This situation highlights an issue with the PlayStation Network that has yet to be resolved. This issue needs to be addressed if Sony truly plans to phase out discs entirely by 2028, as stated in its recent announcement.
