This week, Motorola is celebrating 97 years since its founding. The brand’s story began in 1928 in Chicago, when brothers Paul and Joseph Galvin opened a small company called Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. The company later became known as Motorola and grew into one of the world’s major players in electronics and telecommunications.

During its early decades, Motorola focused on automotive radios. In the 1930s, the company released one of the first commercial car radios, which quickly gained popularity in the U.S. Later, during World War II, Motorola developed portable radios for the U.S. military, earning the brand international recognition.
In the latter half of the 20th century, the company revolutionized mobile communication. In 1973, Motorola introduced the world’s first portable mobile phone, the DynaTAC, which officially launched on the market in 1983. The device weighed nearly a kilogram, but it marked the beginning of the mobile communications era.

Throughout the 1990s, Motorola was a leading force in the mobile industry, releasing iconic models such as the StarTAC – the first flip phone, which became a true symbol of the era. In the 2000s, the company replicated this success with the ultra-thin Razr V3, selling hundreds of millions of units and turning the device into a global fashion accessory.
Today, Motorola continues to operate in the smartphone market as part of Lenovo. The brand remains recognizable through the Moto G and Edge series, as well as the revived Razr line, now featuring foldable screens. In this way, Motorola combines its rich heritage with modern technology.

Over nearly a century, Motorola has grown from a small factory with just a few employees into a global manufacturer that has made significant contributions to the development of radio, mobile communication, and smartphones. Its history demonstrates how innovation, boldness, and adaptability can sustain a brand’s longevity even in a highly competitive industry.
As it celebrates 97 years today, Motorola remains a symbol of progress and a strong player shaping the future of communications.
