Ukraine’s largest tourniquet manufacturer, SICH, has released a limited-edition series featuring traditional embroidery patterns to mark Vyshyvanka Day. According to the company, this isn’t just a design choice – it’s an effort to make life-saving equipment feel more relatable, familiar, and emotionally accessible to Ukrainians.

The SICH-Tourniquet is a medical device designed and manufactured in Ukraine by local engineers using domestically sourced materials. What sets the new series apart is the addition of a traditional embroidery-inspired pattern on the windlass stick, giving the device a culturally symbolic touch.

“We want the tourniquet to stop being seen solely as a tool for the front line,” company representatives explain. “It shouldn’t be feared, but understood as part of everyday preparedness – like a first-aid kit or fire extinguisher. It should be within reach in a car, an office, or an emergency bag at home. We can’t always prevent emergencies, but we can be ready for them.”

The idea for this limited edition series arose in celebration of World Vyshyvanka Day. To bring the project to life, SICH consulted with specialists for advice on the pattern design. The embroidery on the tourniquet is an original creation by the company’s graphic designer, developed in collaboration with ethnographers. Each element of the pattern holds symbolic meaning:

  • The straight cross is considered a talisman against evil.
  • Oak leaves with acorns symbolize strength and courage.
  • The Alatyr star is used as a protective element against illness, weakness, and ill intentions.

“This tourniquet is not just a tool. It’s our talisman. A symbol of strength, faith, and care. Each element of the pattern – the straight cross, oak leaves with acorns, and the Alatyr star – is carefully chosen and intricately designed, carrying deep symbolism and powerful protective energy,” said ethnographer Oksana Korol, who assisted in the development of the design. “It’s not just a drawing; it’s a prayer embedded in every stroke, every line.”

The company also noted that, in terms of functionality, the limited-edition series is identical to the standard model. It remains the same effective hemorrhage control device, with changes made only to the design. The tourniquet is available for purchase until May 30, while the series is being produced. “SICH aims to set a ‘trend’ for caring about personal safety and the safety of loved ones,” the company added. “Being prepared means not fearing, but having what can save a life within reach.”
