Meta has found a new source of data to train its AI models: its own employees. The company intends to use the information gathered by tracking mouse movements and keystrokes of its staff in an effort to create more powerful and efficient artificial intelligence.
The story, first published by Reuters, demonstrates the lengths to which tech companies are going to find new sources of training data, the basis of AI models that allow programs to perform tasks and respond to user requests more efficiently.

When asked by TechCrunch to comment on the situation, a Meta spokesperson provided the following response: “If we’re building agents to help people perform everyday tasks on computers, our models need real-world examples of how people actually use them, such as mouse movements, button presses, and navigating drop-down menus. To this end, we are launching an internal tool that will capture such actions in specific applications to train our models. We have in place measures to protect sensitive content, and the data collected is not used for any other purpose.”

This trend points to a disturbing aspect of privacy inherent in the AI industry. Last week, it was reported that corporate communications of closed startups – including Slack archives and Jira tickets – are being bought up en masse and turned into training data for artificial intelligence.
