It’s been almost a quarter of a century since the iconic sci-fi series Firefly was canceled. But now, new teasers featuring actor Nathan Fillion, a.k.a. Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds, and several members of the original cast have excited fans. The web is actively discussing the possibility of the series’ relaunch after a hint of an important “announcement” that is to take place this month.

Firefly was a sci-fi western with space opera elements that followed the adventures of the crew of the Serenity, a cargo and smuggling ship that was fleeing government persecution. It aired on Fox in 2002 and failed to meet expectations in terms of audience engagement, so it was quickly canceled. But despite its short television history, Firefly later became wildly popular, including commercially through DVD sales, and formed a strong fan base.

For years, they have hoped that someday the series might get a sequel (not in the form of Serenity) or a reboot, and now it looks like their dreams might come true. The reason for this was given by Nathan Fillion on his Instagram. The actor posted a series of videos in which he visits the homes of his Firefly colleagues. Captain Tightpants visited Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Jewel Staite. The videos quickly attracted the attention of fans and caused a wave of speculation about their meaning.

The post with the video, where the actor comes to see Summer Glau (who seems to have not changed at all in 20+ years), states that “Annoucement coming soon”. Of course, this further fueled the wave of rumors and expectations. Many are convinced that this promises a reunion of the cast, but it is not yet clear in what format. And in the video where Fillion arrives at the door of Jewel Staite, it is clarified that the announcement will be made on Sunday, March 15.

Some fans are trying not to overestimate their expectations. Some speculate that the actor may simply organize a meeting of the Serenity team to watch the series together as part of the Once We Were Spacemen podcast, which he hosts with another Firefly actor, Alan Tudyk. This version seems logical, since the videos appeared on the podcast account.

However, some details raise doubts. In the video where Fillion meets with Sean Maher, the caption directly states: “Some of you have guessed convention, podcast, or cross-over. You are wrong.” Because of this, fans began to build bolder theories. Among the possible options are either a full-fledged return of the series or a special project for the 25th anniversary of Firefly, which will feature the original cast.
