The Rick and Morty animated series is preparing to launch its ninth season, but the project’s creator Dan Harmon has already officially revealed ambitious plans for the franchise’s future. Following the information that Warner Bros. is developing a feature film based on this universe, Harmon confirmed the truth of these rumors: a feature film about Rick and Morty is indeed in the works.
Although Harmon was not authorized to disclose many details about the new film, he noted that the news of the project’s launch had already leaked online. That is why in his recent interview with CinemaBlend, he decided to officially confirm this fact. According to Harmon, the team saw the same information leak on the Internet as the rest of the public, and now they can openly announce the preparation of the film. Jacob Hare has been confirmed as the director of the upcoming film.
The authors of the project did not even try to find someone else to fill this position, as they consider Hare to be an incredible specialist. Harmon emphasized that the phrase “rock star” understates his merits too much, as it often means some kind of temporary and fleeting success. Instead, Jacob’s appearance in the team was a real fundamental breakthrough and reliable support for the entire series.
Harmon did not spare any compliments for the director of the upcoming film and even compared Hare to Donald Glover, who played in another famous Harmon creation, the TV series Community. The author noted that when the team first started talking about the potential creation of a film version and the search for a director, the main question was whether Jacob would be able to take on the job. It was a dream come true for the authors, so they didn’t even think about hiring someone from outside the team who just had successful experience working on other well-known animation projects. Jacob Hare is a proven team member who has created some of the show’s most amazing episodes. Harmon considers him to be the directorial equivalent of Donald Glover, as the team has never been able to find any boundaries or limits to his multifaceted creativity.
The series’ production manager Scott Marder also expressed his admiration for Hare’s professionalism. He recalled that Jacob serves as the project’s chief coordinating director. According to Marder, if viewers like the upcoming ninth season, it will be a direct merit of Hare, who has made every effort to do so.
Since the news about the movie version was not supposed to be made public so early, the release of the feature film about Rick and Morty is likely to take place not soon. Even the format of the upcoming release remains unknown – whether the film will be released in a wide theatrical release or will appear immediately on streaming platforms.
While the movie is in production, the original TV show is returning to the screens with its ninth season. The preliminary official description of the new episodes contained one important promise that fans are eager to see in the upcoming feature film: the complete absence of low-quality AI content. The announcement stated that the ninth season would consist exclusively of certified hits without any AI junk. The authors ironically promised viewers only a first-class organic product created by real people with all their natural flaws. The authors urged the audience to be sure to watch the new episodes, jokingly adding that otherwise their refusal to spend time with their own families for the sake of producing the show would be in vain.
Michael Uvelin, the head of Adult Swim, in his official statement, timed to coincide with the announcement of the new season release date, also praised the work done. He noted that although his position obliges him to claim that the project surpasses itself every time, in this case, such words are absolutely true. Uvelin even found it a bit scary how the creative team puts an incredible amount of talent and brilliant ideas into creating these series from season to season.
