Microsoft has officially announced that Windows 11 has surpassed 1 billion active devices worldwide. This is a strategically important milestone for the company, especially since the new system managed to reach this figure faster than Windows 10, which was once positioned as a universal platform for mass user migration.

It took Windows 10 1,706 days to reach the 1 billion device milestone. Windows 11 accomplished this task in 1576 days. The achievement was announced by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during the quarterly financial briefing, calling this result one of the key indicators of the growth of the Windows ecosystem.

Windows 11 has been on the market for almost 5 years, which is considered a long life cycle for the technology industry. At the same time, the launch of the platform was accompanied by a significant wave of criticism. The most controversial issue was the increased system requirements, which still prevent millions of Windows 10 computer owners from performing the free upgrade.

Additional pressure on the system’s reputation was created by sharp changes in Microsoft’s priorities, including a focus on AI, as well as user complaints about the stability and overall quality of the platform. In response, the company has repeatedly stated that Windows 11 will remain the foundation of the PC ecosystem and will be developed to meet the needs of different categories of users, including developers, gamers, and office teams.

Despite the controversy, Windows 11 is already running on more than 1 billion devices, making it the most widely used of the so-called “controversial” versions of Windows. In comparison, Windows 8 and Windows Vista, which were also heavily criticized, never managed to even come close to this level of adoption.

This may indicate a gap between the perception of the platform in the technology community and actual usage scenarios. Most ordinary users who perceive Windows as a working tool probably do not experience the same problems that are actively discussed in professional communities.

At the same time, the fact that 1 billion users have been reached does not relieve Microsoft of its responsibility for further product development. It is now critical for the company not only to attract new users but also to retain the existing audience by increasing stability, performance, and trust in the platform.
