German developers have introduced a highly mobile next-generation air defense system designed to protect military units while on the move. Its platform-independent architecture allows the system to be integrated onto a variety of vehicle chassis.
One of Germany’s leading defense contractors has unveiled its latest mobile air defense solution. Designated the IRIS-T SLS MK4, the system was developed specifically to protect critical infrastructure and provide air defense coverage for military convoys during movement. Developed by Diehl Defence, this fourth-generation variant of the IRIS-T SLS is capable of engaging targets at ranges of up to 12 km and at altitudes of up to 6 km.

Company representatives stated that the system integrates a radar, command-and-control functions, and a launcher with its interceptors into a single vehicle. This approach effectively creates an all-in-one air defense solution. Thanks to its compact dimensions and high mobility, the system can be redeployed with minimal delay.
High Degree of Automation. Among the other notable features of the IRIS-T SLS MK4 is its extensive automation. This has made it possible to reduce crew requirements while enabling a rapid response to incoming threats. According to the company’s press release, the system’s self-contained design provides a high degree of flexibility, allowing it to be adapted to a wide range of customer requirements.

Diehl Defence also provided additional details, noting that the interceptor is based on the well-established IRIS-T air-to-air missile. The missile hardware remains unchanged; however, in the future it is expected to support firing while the vehicle is in motion. The system’s architecture also allows for the integration of supplementary effectors, including remote weapon stations and Diehl Defence’s specialized CICADA counter-UAV missile.
The MK4 variant fully aligns with NATO requirements. The SLS system is already an integral element of the layered air defence concept promoted by Diehl Defence. The planned upgrade to the MK4 standard reflects both NATO interoperability requirements and current operational needs. Among the key changes is an increase in launcher capacity to eight missiles, which directly enhances the system’s engagement capability in combat conditions.

The IRIS-T missile remains the core component of Diehl Defence’s ground-based air defence systems, as reflected by its continued use in the combat-proven SLS configuration. Designed with long-term relevance in mind, the IRIS-T SLS MK4 is intended to address evolving and increasingly dynamic threat environments.
A notable feature of the updated system is its modular design. Since the launcher architecture is not tied to a specific vehicle, it can be integrated onto a range of platforms according to customer requirements. Diehl Defence also noted that the system’s capabilities can be expanded through the integration of additional countermeasure options, including CICADA drone interceptors and remote weapon stations. This approach broadens the range of potential missions beyond traditional air defence roles.

The unveiling of the IRIS-T SLS Mk4 comes amid rapidly growing demand for modern ground-based air defence systems across Europe and other regions. The successful operational use of the broader IRIS-T family, combined with increasing investment in layered air defence networks, has positioned the system as a key component of the future air defence architecture of NATO and partner nations.
By combining high mobility, automation, a modular design philosophy, and proven missile technology, the IRIS-T SLS Mk4 represents Diehl Defence’s latest step toward providing armed forces with a flexible, rapidly deployable solution for countering contemporary aerial threats in an increasingly complex security environment.
