BYD has announced the launch of its first Flash Chargers in Europe, which can charge electric vehicles in just 5 minutes. The company unveiled the first charging stations in the UK and Germany, and promised to build 3000 charging stations across Europe and 300 in the UK by the end of 2027.

Flash Chargers are BYD’s own development and its response to the Tesla Supercharger network. The Chinese company said it has planned a rapid rollout of a wide network focused on highways and high-traffic areas.

Flash Chargers themselves are not a new technology for BYD, but they are available to European drivers for the first time. One such charging station is capable of providing a charging capacity of up to 1500 kW, which is three times higher than the Tesla Supercharger V4 charging stations.

In addition, BYD intends to compete with Tesla and Ionity by offering lower tariffs. The company plans to achieve this through the use of battery energy storage systems. Such batteries will be charged at night during periods of low load on the grid and will allow consumers to receive cheaper electricity. The company also believes that it will be able to service more electric vehicles during the day compared to competitors, which will further contribute to lower prices.

Of course, to take full advantage of BYD’s ultra-fast charging stations, you need to own a BYD electric vehicle equipped with the latest Blade Battery 2.0 battery. This battery is already used in some of the company’s electric vehicles, but currently only one model sold in Europe is compatible with Flash Chargers – the Denza Z9 GT. At least for now.

Just a five-minute charge allows you to replenish the battery charge from 10% to 70%, while almost full charging, from 10% to 97%, takes only 9 minutes. In addition, the technology promises minimal loss of performance in low temperatures.

The locations of the first Flash Chargers in the UK have not yet been disclosed, but the rollout will be fast – 300 charging stations are planned to be installed in DENZA stores and other locations by the end of 2026.

“The first demonstration of FLASH Charging in the UK is another significant milestone for this technology,” said BYD Executive Vice President Stella Lee. – “FLASH Charging’s ability to charge our second-generation Blade Battery to ready in five minutes, to full charge in nine minutes, and to add just three minutes in cold weather sets a new standard for the future of premium mobility.
