The first electric GTI has finally become a reality. Volkswagen has presented the ID. Polo GTI – a 222 hp electric sports hot hatch with a starting price of about $45 thousand. It is symbolic that the electric car was released 50 years after the launch of the first Golf GTI.
Following the model’s unveiling at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, Volkswagen said that the ID. Polo is “100% electric and 100% GTI” and “feels like a quintessential GTI”. The model is equipped with a 222 hp (166 kW) front electric motor and 290 Nm of torque, which allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.

Although it is not the fastest car in the segment, ID. Polo compensates for this with other characteristics. The model has an adaptive sports suspension and progressive steering, which Volkswagen says provides better control and a “unique GTI feel.” It uses the same 52 kWh battery as the standard ID. Polo. The GTI version has a WLTP range of up to 424 km. The car supports fast DC charging with a capacity of up to 105 kW and can be charged from 10% to 80% in about 24 minutes.

Despite the fact that the design retains the features of the first Golf in 1976, it has been reinterpreted in accordance with the new Volkswagen Pure Positive styling. The signature red stripe remains on the front, but now it stretches almost the entire width. On the left is the new three-dimensional GTI logo. In front, Volkswagen has also added an LED strip, an illuminated VW logo and new IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights. At the rear, there is a version of the IQ.LIGHT headlights with two external three-dimensional LED elements on each side.

The interior is finished in black with red accents. The electric hot hatch has a new GTI sports steering wheel and premium seats. The front panel is also based on Volkswagen’s new interior concept and features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch center screen for the multimedia system.

Like the standard ID. Polo, the GTI version has a new Retro Mode that changes the design of the digital instrument cluster and multimedia system to resemble the first-generation Golf.

Thanks to compact drive modules and a flat battery, the electric hot hatch offers 19 mm more interior space than the gasoline Polo GTI. With the rear seats folded down, the boot volume increases to 1,240 liters compared to 1,125 liters in the gasoline version of the Polo. According to Florian Umbach, Head of Driving Dynamics at Volkswagen, the company is already working on a more powerful version of the model. He said that the company plans to release the ID. Polo GTI Clubsport with an output of about 282 hp.

Volkswagen will open pre-orders for the ID. Polo GTI this fall. The price will start at about $45,000, while the standard ID. Polo costs from $29,000.
