Xiaomi has brought its second electric car to one of the world’s most challenging race tracks, the Nürburgring, and the result was impressive! The new Xiaomi YU7 GT outperformed all previous SUVs on this track, both electric and gasoline.

Xiaomi YU7 GT will be a high-performance version of the YU7 electric crossover. The model was presented in February, and its official launch will take place this week. The SUV has a 990 hp powerplant under the hood, and the top speed of the car is about 299 km/h. The electric vehicle is to be equipped with a 101.7 kWh battery with a charge lasting about 700 km. Initially, it was expected that the cost of the novelty would be from $66,000 to $74,000, but Xiaomi was a bit surprised when it announced a price of about $54,000.

Before the official launch, Xiaomi used a familiar strategy again – testing on the Nürburgring circuit to demonstrate the capabilities of the new model. Automakers often use the results of laps on famous tracks as a marketing tool before launching new models. Recently, the competition has intensified due to Chinese brands that are increasingly bringing their cars to Europe and competing with local manufacturers.

When Xiaomi introduced the SU7 Ultra sports sedan, the company set the Nürburgring record for four-door cars, and it was a prototype without some of the production equipment. Subsequently, the production version also set a record for production electric vehicles, although it was later surpassed. A similar scenario repeated itself with the YU7 GT. The new electric crossover set a record among SUVs on the track often called Green Hell.

According to Xiaomi, it took the car 7 minutes 34.931 seconds to complete the circuit, which is almost two seconds faster than the previous record. It was set by the Audi Q8 RS in 2024, which drove the track in 7 minutes 36.698 seconds. Prior to that, the record was held by the Porsche Cayenne GT Turbo with a time of 7 minutes 38.925 seconds. Later, Xiaomi reported another lap with an even better result of 7 minutes 22.755 seconds.

Xiaomi published a video of the race from the camera inside the cabin. The recording shows some changes in the car’s design. The company announced the use of a special Track Package, but did not specify its composition.

The safety frame is a typical element of cars for record-breaking races, but we can also assume the absence of rear seats. If it turns out that the car was modified beyond the production configuration, this may cause discussions about the result. In this case, Xiaomi may return to the track with a production version of the YU7 GT to set a new official time.

Despite the record, the YU7 GT was inferior to the SU7. Xiaomi’s production sedan is about 30 seconds faster on the Nurburgring, which is logical, as an SUV is not a sports car by nature. But for its class, the result of the YU7 GT remains impressive. This record is yet another confirmation of how fast Chinese companies are increasing their development rates and how rapidly the automotive market is changing.

I wonder what result the Porsche Cayenne Electric will show. The most powerful Porsche in history is already preparing for the start of sales, and it will have a power plant with 1139 hp.
