Bungie has announced that Destiny 2 will receive its final major content update starting June 9. After that, the game will no longer receive expansion packs or any other major updates. The developers admitted that after the launch of The Final Shape expansion pack in 2024, which was another stage in the gradual decline in the popularity of the first-person online shooter, the company decided to focus on new projects that are entering the initial development stage.

The final update, titled Monument of Triumph, will be a large-scale summary of the entire Destiny 2 story and will focus on player achievements. The key innovation will be Legendary Marks, a new achievement reward that will provide access to free armor decorations, accessories, as well as a unique title and ornament set for the most active players.
Along with the update, the game will have new story details and Easter eggs related to the lore. The central hub of activities will once again be the Director, while portal activities will be moved to separate lower nodes of the interface. Pantheon 2.0 will be added to the game on a regular basis. The new content will be released in stages: On June 9, the first bosses will become available, on June 13, a full series of trials will open, and on June 16, the battle rotation system will start working.

Significant changes will affect equipment and activities in the Sol system. All equipment from raids, dungeons, and locations will receive a new level system, set bonuses, and additional characteristics. Weapons created will support the development path from the first to the fifth level. Planetary exploration will also be updated with the Distortions mechanic, which will add new challenges and exclusive rewards at certain locations.

All exotic armor obtained since The Edge of Fate will automatically be upgraded to level five. Bungie will also conduct a large-scale balancing of exotic weapons and equipment.

Portal’s difficulty system is also undergoing a significant update. Bungie aims to simplify the choice of activities and make the progression clearer. Weapons will be distributed among six separate categories of operations, and the complexity of Onslaught, The Coil, and Contest of Elders modes will become gradual. For PvP players, Crucible will be replenished with three new modes – Arena, Glass Cannon, and Software. Iron Banner will switch to a four-week rotation system, and the Heavy Metal mode will have a third type of equipment – Cabal Walker. Gambit will receive the status of a separate category of activities with its own rewards, updated weapons, and equipment set bonuses.

Bungie will also abandon seasonal events. Rewards from old events, such as Festival of the Lost and The Dawning, will be transferred to a single seller, Monument of Triumph. The game will also add the Bright Engram Focusing system with protection against getting the same items again and bring back the Sparrow Racing League with classic tracks, new races, weapons, and rewards.
But Bungie will continue to support Marathon. The studio confirmed its commitment to the extraction shooter despite the current low number of players. The new experimental PvE mode is expected to help attract a new audience.
