The God of War: Laufey project has finally received an official release date, and Kratos fans have also received some good news. The team at Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that the game will be released on February 16, 2027, and announced that development has begun on a new full-fledged installment dedicated to Kratos.

Sony first unveiled *God of War: Laufey* during the June PlayStation State of Play livestream, though the exact release date was not announced at that time. This immediately sparked speculation about possible release dates, with industry insider NateTheHate pointing to a release in the first half of 2027. Now, the developers at Santa Monica Studio have put an end to the speculation by officially setting the release date for February 16, 2027.

This news comes at a difficult time for collectors of PlayStation games. Sony recently announced its intention to completely discontinue the release of new games on physical discs starting in 2028, sparking a wave of outrage among gamers worldwide. Fortunately for fans of the God of War series, the developers were able to confirm that Laufey would be released on physical media even before the release date was announced. The information released this week allows players looking to purchase the disc edition to plan their purchases in advance.

The release date was confirmed during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con (according to IGN), where Creative Director Cory Barlog also announced that the next main game in the series, starring Kratos, is already in development and will be directly connected to the story of Laufey. This announcement should reassure fans who felt that the initial footage of Laufey lacked the presence of the franchise’s key hero.

The main focus in *God of War: Laufey* is on the character of Faye, and initial reactions to the game’s opening sequence have been mixed. While some players praised the combat system and visuals, others found the gameplay too simplistic and, unsurprisingly, missed having Kratos in the spotlight. If you were counting on an action-packed adventure featuring Kratos, you might want to lower your expectations a bit for the upcoming release. The Laufey project appears to be a standalone title, and the Santa Monica team seems confident enough in Faye’s story to commit to a full-fledged game about her before bringing Kratos back.
