For the first time in nearly 20 years, Mojang has announced a significant increase in Minecraft’s hardware requirements – a rare move for one of the biggest gaming projects in history. The Microsoft-owned studio aims to prepare Minecraft: Java Edition for future requirements, but users with older computers are unlikely to be pleased this time around.

Officially, 16 GB of RAM is now recommended for Minecraft: Java Edition, and that’s just the baseline. Mojang explained that the world-famous sandbox game is adopting a more modern benchmark for system specifications. The company acknowledges that owners of outdated systems will be disappointed, but such steps are necessary to further improve the cubic universe for the rest of the players.

This update comes after 17 years without any changes to the Java Edition requirements, which is an extremely long time by video game standards. Over nearly two decades, Minecraft has effectively outgrown its old framework: gamers will need more powerful PCs to run future builds – and that’s without taking into account the extremely high prices of key silicon components, such as memory chips and graphics processors.

Minecraft’s specifications were officially updated on July 21, affecting both the “Fast” and “Fancy” presets. The game’s official store page now lists 1080p at 30 FPS as the benchmark for the “Fast” setting and 1080p at 60 FPS for “Fancy.” The “Fast” setting requires 8 GB of RAM with a discrete graphics card or 12 GB with integrated graphics. Meanwhile, the “Fancy” configuration calls for 16 GB of RAM to ensure smooth performance of the Java Edition in the near future.

The recommendation to use 16 GB of RAM may seem significant, considering that Java Edition currently allocates only about 4 GB by default. In addition, Mojang is updating the requirements for CPUs and GPUs: for the “Fancy” preset to function properly, more modern and powerful x86-64 or Arm64 chips are now required.

Minecraft: Bedrock Edition remains less demanding on system resources than the Java Edition, although the latter is still required to install user mods on a PC. Mojang notes that the new requirements are fairly moderate compared to modern AAA games, so the Java Edition will run smoothly on most well-equipped gaming PCs.

The company explained: “We aim to clearly inform users about the specific hardware capable of ensuring stable performance of the Java Edition. Older devices will still be able to run the game, but it will be difficult to guarantee a high-quality gaming experience. This could result in frame rate drops, graphical glitches, long load times, or performance that falls short of expectations.”

Guaranteed performance on outdated hardware is officially a thing of the past, but Mojang insists this decision is for the best. Discontinuing support for outdated configurations will allow developers to focus on significant technical improvements, the first of which will be the transition from OpenGL to Vulkan.
