AMD has introduced its Versal Premium Gen 2 Memory on Package (MoP) adaptive systems-on-a-chip (SoC). The MoP architecture integrates up to 32 GB of LPDDR5X memory into a single package, delivering bandwidth of up to 288 GB/s and taking up to 60% less space on the board. This allows engineers to build high-bandwidth systems without the risks and time costs associated with designing memory at the PCB level.

As applications in AI, networking, and the aerospace and defense industries require the processing of ever-increasing amounts of data under stricter space and power constraints, MoP focuses specifically on such solutions, including test and measurement systems, professional video editing, and VPX platforms for secure communications and accelerated defense applications.

“For years, system architects had to choose between the memory bandwidth they wanted and the space, power and longevity their programs could actually live with. Memory on Package removes that tradeoff. Our customers can design for the system they want to build, not the one their memory constraints allow, and bring it to market faster”, – said Sumit Shah, head of product management and marketing, Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group.

With new adaptive SoCs featuring memory-on-package technology, AMD is redefining the capabilities of compact systems. By integrating LPDDR5X into the package, the devices deliver higher performance compared to LPDDR5X mounted on the board, while taking up less space than solutions with discrete memory chips. This paves the way for form factors that were previously difficult or impractical to implement with external memory. Additionally, it helps developers meet the requirements of the telecommunications industry and the VPX standard.

Versal Premium Gen 2 MoP devices integrate support for CXL 3.1 and PCIe 6.0 at 64 Gbps in the form of hardware IP, enabling high-speed data transfer in combination with AMD EPYC processors to accelerate data-intensive applications. This gives system architects greater flexibility to scale memory resources thanks to support for LPDDR5X at speeds up to 9,000 Mbit/s and the ability to connect to CXL memory consolidation and expansion modules.

Versal Premium Gen 2 MoP adaptive SoCs are designed for demanding physical and enterprise AI environments and support operation within an industrial temperature range of -40°C to 110°C. By utilizing LPDDR5X and offering a lifecycle of over 15 years, they help reduce product availability dependence on shorter refresh cycles for high-bandwidth memory. This reduces the risk of forced redesigns due to memory discontinuation or limited availability.

The PCIe Integrity and Data Encryption (IDE) feature, introduced in the PCIe 6.0 standard, helps protect data from physical attacks by ensuring it is encrypted during transmission at the link layer. DDR memory encryption in integrated controllers protects data at rest without using programmable logic resources, while the Hard 400G High-Speed Crypto Engines provide high-speed, secure data processing.

Samples of the AMD Versal Premium Gen 2 MoP will begin shipping in late 2026, with volume shipments expected in the second half of next year.
