Lenovo has unveiled a rather interesting gadget, the AI Student Phone – a highly specialized and simplified mobile device designed primarily for schoolchildren and their parents. It costs just 299 yuan (approximately $44). The developers have completely eliminated games, a web browser, and social media, but have focused on AI-assisted learning, location tracking, and parental control features.

In terms of hardware, the AI Student Phone resembles a standard push-button phone more than a traditional smartphone. It features a small 1.83-inch touchscreen display protected by shatter-resistant Panda glass and also supports handwriting input.

Inside is a 1,850 mAh battery, and it connects via standard 4G networks. The device does not require a special IoT SIM card, so it is easy to set up for regular voice calls and HD video calls.

However, the software has been intentionally kept minimal. The main feature is a physical AI button that activates the voice assistant. Children can hold it down to ask general knowledge questions or get help with homework. The phone will also come with a pre-installed library containing math formulas and English vocabulary. The goal is to provide schoolchildren with a convenient learning tool without open access to the wider internet.

For parents, this device serves as a tracking tool. It uses GPS to monitor the child’s location in real time and supports a geofence feature that sends a notification to the parent’s phone if the child leaves or enters a designated area, such as the school grounds or their neighborhood.

Through the proprietary app, parents can remotely manage the phone. They can block calls from unknown numbers, set a schedule for the device to automatically turn on and off, and activate “class mode.” When this mode is enabled during school hours, the phone is limited to displaying the time and the ability to make emergency SOS calls.

Lenovo has also added a QR code-based mobile payment system. Children can use the phone to make purchases in stores, and parents can set spending limits and monitor all transactions through the app to ensure the feature is used responsibly. The package includes a detachable strap for comfortable carrying, and the device itself is available in orange-white, pink, and blue.
