Until recently, the story of a movie based on the Elden Ring game by Alex Garland and A24 Studios sounded almost as mysterious and bizarre as the descriptions of the lore in the game itself. However, now this project is gradually gaining clearer outlines and moving from the realm of rumors to reality. It has become known that filming will begin this spring, and the premiere is scheduled for March 3, 2028.
After a number of unofficial reports, the studio also confirmed the cast. Kit Connor, known for the projects Heartstopper and The Wild Robot, will play the lead role (by the way, here we have a selection of cool books about robots, including The Wild Robot). He will be joined by Nick Offerman, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz.

The film will be created with an eye toward the IMAX format. George R.R. Martin has also joined the work, which is unlikely to come as a surprise to those familiar with his involvement in the game’s development. It was he who helped shape the universe and general story ideas together with Hidetaka Miyazaki from FromSoftware.

Elden Ring, released in 2022, has become one of the brightest representatives of the soulslike genre, sold millions of copies and received dozens of awards. The game takes place in the world of the Lands Between, a mythical space where a powerful artifact known as the Elden Ring personified order. It was previously ruled over by the immortal Queen Marika, who acted as keeper of the Elden Ring. When Marika eventually shattered the Elden Ring and disappeared, her demigod children began warring over pieces of the Ring in an event called the Shattering. Each demigod possesses a shard of the Ring called a Great Rune, which corrupts them with power. In the game, the player character is a Tarnished, one of a group of exiles from the Lands Between who are summoned back after the Shattering.
How the movie version will be able to convey the layers and depth that have made the game so popular among millions of players remains an open question. However, now that the production and release dates have been set, the countdown to the movie has officially begun.
