Google has started a phased introduction of new face retouching tools in the Google Photos app, which users have been waiting for for a long time. When presenting the feature, the company emphasizes that photos should convey how a person felt at the time of shooting. This approach may seem unusual to supporters of the classical view of photography, where the image should reflect the real appearance as accurately as possible. Regardless, Google is officially launching quick face editing tools on Android.

In its blog post, the company notes that the new features allow for delicate enhancements to the appearance. These include correcting skin texture, removing imperfections, brightening eyes, or whitening teeth. To do this, just click on the face in the photo, select one of the available tools – including those for restoring, smoothing, treating the under-eye area, irises, teeth, eyebrows, or lips – and adjust the desired intensity of the effect yourself.

This feature has been expected for a long time. Back in October, references to a facial retouching tool were found in the Google Photos code, including options related to acne, skin blemishes, dark circles under the eyes, and teeth whitening. In December, we managed to activate this feature manually, which allowed us to evaluate the Touch Up interface for the first time. It contained separate controls for such elements as the under-eye area, irises, teeth, eyebrows, and lips. The video posted earlier demonstrates how the tool worked at that stage.
The company reports that the new retouching tools are gradually becoming available to users around the world in the Google Photos app on Android devices with at least 4 GB of RAM and running Android 9 or later. At the same time, the choice is always up to the user – whether to leave the photo as realistic as possible or to adapt it to their own perception of the moment.
