Gundam is one of the longest-running active media franchises in the history of anime from Bandai Namco Filmworks, which effectively started and popularized the sci-fi mecha subgenre centered on giant fighting robots. Currently, the franchise includes several dozen series, OVAs, and feature films created by Sunrise, as well as various video games, books, and manga series.

Although the details of the movie adaptation have remained unknown for a long time, Netflix is now ready to lower the level of intrigue a bit and says in a blog post that the plot will see mech pilots on opposite sides in a long war between Earth and its space colonies. “Shifting alliances and a growing threat put them on a collision course with each other,” reads the preview description of the film, “and they find themselves in a grueling race across the stars that could determine the fate of humanity. With breathtaking battles, deep human emotion, and epic cinematic scale, this is Gundam as never before seen.”

The movie, which will be released on Netflix, is being created by Legendary Pictures in collaboration with Bandai Namco Filmworks and will be the first franchise adaptation. Filming is taking place in Queensland, Australia. The director is Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle, who also wrote the script and will be one of the project’s producers. The production team also includes Linda Moran, Sidney Sweeney, Noah Centineo and others.
