Spotify is still primarily a music streaming service, but it’s impossible not to notice just how much its capabilities have expanded over the past few years. The platform offers subscribers an ever-increasing variety of content to enjoy, such as podcasts and audiobooks, and a few years ago, music videos were added to the mix. And it’s precisely this last category that’s the focus of an interesting new feature that may be coming to Spotify soon. And yes, it resembles a YouTube feature.

Currently, Spotify offers several different options for downloading content to listen to offline. Users of the free version can only download podcasts, while Spotify Premium subscribers can download podcasts, playlists of songs, or even entire albums. But so far, none of these options have included music videos.

After reviewing the changes in Spotify for Android version 9.1.76.1111, experts at Android Authority discovered what appears to be an early stage of development aimed at addressing this shortcoming.
The code contains two lines indicating that the app may gain the ability to allow users (presumably only Spotify Premium subscribers) to download music videos to their devices and later delete those they no longer wish to keep. Saved videos will be available for viewing offline.

Similar features are already available in the YouTube and Netflix apps. It’s likely that, in this case, users won’t be able to save music videos as regular files on their smartphones either. Instead, Spotify will likely store the downloaded content directly within the app. This feature could be quite useful while traveling, when you have limited mobile data or are in an area with poor network coverage.
It is currently unknown when Spotify plans to roll out this feature, but its appearance in the code already looks promising.
