I’m planning more than one article about the Cougar CFV235 series – or lineup, to be precise. Hopefully there will be three in total, because a single short piece simply isn’t enough to explain how surprisingly ambitious and interesting the various CFV235 configurations are. Even on the manufacturer’s official page, the lineup takes up almost an entire screen’s worth of scrolling.

Price and Positioning

The importance of the Cougar CFV235 lies in its incredibly simple, clever, somewhat compromise-driven, yet genuinely interesting concept. The idea is to create a dual-chamber case design with a wide gap between the sections, serving both as a spacious cable-management area and a mounting zone for optional RGB lighting. Built around this foundation, Cougar has already expanded the concept into multiple variations: traditional tower layouts, aquarium-style cases, and even models equipped with integrated displays.

Cougar CFV235

I’ll try to cover all of that step by step. And I’ll start… with the standard Cougar CFV235. Its price stands at $129 for the white version and around $122 for the black model. If we set aside the usual “popularity tax,” the Cougar CFV235 honestly doesn’t feel significantly overpriced compared to mid-range cases that are far less ambitious in terms of concept and design.

Package contents

Although the packaging is better here, and the package is more comprehensive. There are two separate boxes – a small one, containing screws and cable ties. And a large one, the size of… the front panel itself. I’ve seen these before, for cases with interchangeable panels, where the front of the case can have either glass or a metal mesh.

Cougar CFV235

However, the Cougar CFV235 takes a different approach. Inside the box, you get not only a standard magnetic dust filter, but also an L-shaped RGB module. I’ll talk more about it later, because I almost overlooked it myself – and it actually turned out to be one of the most important elements of the entire case.

Exterior Design

Now let’s move on to the design itself. During the review, I started calling the overall structure “a rectangle after taxes,” because right above the power supply chamber there’s a cutout a little over 22 mm wide. It doesn’t extend across the entire depth of the case – roughly two-thirds of it – so the structural rigidity of the CFV235 remains intact. On top of that, the package includes removable plastic spacers for additional support and stability.

I’ll talk about airflow in much greater detail in the next article dedicated to the CFV235 Mesh – so stay tuned if you don’t want to miss it. But in short, this design brings more advantages than drawbacks.

Fans and Cooling of the Cougar CFV235

At the same time, the case’s main advantage is what the manufacturer calls its “progressive appearance” and “floating design.” Officially, however, the concept is referred to as Central Flow Ventilation – abbreviated as CFV. And honestly, you’re unlikely to find another case built around a similar idea. Surprisingly enough, this unusual structure has very little impact on overall component compatibility.

Cougar CFV235

First of all, the case comes with what I’d call two and a half fans included. One is a standard Cougar JGR120 mounted at the rear. The remaining “one and a half” is the COUGAR Unity ARGB 240 module, which essentially consists of two 120 mm fans fused into a single unit. Obviously, if one fan fails, you’ll likely have to replace the entire module. On the upside, Cougar backs it with a 3-year warranty.

Cougar CFV235

Overall, the Unity ARGB module has solid specifications, while also helping with cable management and costing noticeably less than traditional daisy-chain fan setups. Another advantage is that Cougar lists this module separately on its official website, much like standalone 180 mm fans. That means the chances of it disappearing from retail stock anytime soon are fairly low.

Cougar CFV235

Overall, you can install up to nine fans in the case, although 140 mm models are only supported at the top. Yes, you can mount up to three of them there, but there is no support for 420 mm radiators – 360 mm is the maximum, and only in the top position. On the plus side, the case includes a built-in 6-port ARGB hub, handling both lighting control and power distribution.

I/O and Cable Management

The hub is controlled via a button on the front panel and supports both motherboard RGB sync and complete lighting shutdown. The front I/O panel also includes two USB Type-A 5 Gbps ports, along with a power button and a combined audio jack. There is even a USB-C port, which – according to the manufacturer – offers not 10 Gbps, but up to 20 Gbps bandwidth.

Cougar CFV235

You also don’t need to worry about cable management here – there are finger-wide gaps for routing cables, silicone grommets on most cutouts, dedicated central channels for thicker cables, and even tie-down points along the sides, which I don’t see very often but always appreciate.

Compatibility

In terms of motherboards, the case supports not only Mini-ITX, Micro-ATX, ATX, and CEB form factors, but also reverse-connector motherboards such as ASUS BTF. The 3.5-inch hard drive bay is universal and comes with dedicated sleds. There is also a separate mounting plate for SSDs, which must be removed in any case to gain access to the rear side of the motherboard.

GPU and Cooling Compatibility

GPU support goes up to 430 mm, and the Cougar CFV235 even includes built-in support for very heavy graphics cards. However, there is no explicit support for vertical GPU mounting. The maximum CPU cooler height is 175 mm.

Cougar CFV235

The maximum PSU length is 200 mm, BUT it is installed with the fan facing upward rather than downward, since airflow intake is positioned at the top. Because of this, any power supplies designed strictly for traditional bottom-facing installation – such as models that rely on passive convection cooling – may not be compatible with this layout.

Aurora Lighting

Now it’s time to talk about the Aurora module. I tested the Cougar CFV235 in both Black and White versions without this module and initially evaluated the lighting setup in that configuration. Later, out of curiosity, I installed Aurora on the white case – and quickly realized I had been quite wrong in my initial impressions.

On the black chassis, where RGB lighting is already quite subtle and the lower illumination is almost a non-factor, the effect is especially muted. Interestingly, the white Aurora modules somehow appear dimmer than expected, even though they logically should look brighter.

Cougar CFV235

What’s important is that with Aurora, the white case suddenly looks like it should cost one and a half to two times more. Seriously – if you have the Cougar CFV235 White, do not skip this module under any circumstances!

Conclusion

The most affordable representative of the Central Flow Ventilation case style performs exceptionally well. The Cougar CFV235 is a surprisingly modern, refined, versatile, and solidly built model – especially in white, though the black version also holds its own. There are still some aspects I find hard to fully understand, particularly the inconsistency in brightness across certain lighting elements. However, overall, the Cougar CFV235 is a case I can confidently recommend.
