Following the completion of production of the all-electric F-150 Lightning, Ford is preparing to debut its next electric pickup truck. The new model will be the first vehicle built on the new Universal EV Platform (UEV). It is expected to be more compact, more energy-efficient, and significantly more affordable than its predecessor. The model’s starting price will be around $30,000.

The first photos of the midsize electric pickup truck with a four-door cab appeared earlier this month when Ford took the prototype out for road testing for the first time. The camouflaged vehicle, spotted in Long Beach by journalists from The Autopian, turned out to be even smaller than expected. It was photographed driving between a Mazda B-Series and an F-150 pickup truck. The prototype had lower ground clearance and a design reminiscent of the iconic Ford Ranchero.

Since the launch of the new electric pickup is scheduled for 2027, Ford is gradually expanding its testing program. Recently, another camouflaged prototype was spotted in Arizona during tests in hot weather conditions. An image posted on KindelAuto’s Instagram page offers a clear view of the vehicle from the side. The new model bears no resemblance to the F-150 Lightning, and if one were to draw any comparisons, it more closely resembles the Ford Maverick.

As The Autopian notes, despite its compact size, “the second row looks quite spacious” upon close inspection. Ford also claims that the new electric pickup will offer more passenger space than the Toyota RAV4.

According to Ford, the UEV platform delivers improvements across virtually all key metrics. The company is taking a fundamentally new approach to reducing costs and improving efficiency. Key solutions include the use of megacasting technology and prismatic LFP batteries.

Salim Merkt, senior manager of Ford’s advanced EV aerodynamics department, previously stated that the new pickup’s aerodynamic efficiency will be “more than 15% higher than that of any other pickup currently on the market.” According to him, this will provide a longer driving range and lower costs for buyers.
The new midsize pickup will be manufactured at the Ford Louisville Assembly plant. The company plans to launch the model in 2027, with the first deliveries to customers beginning shortly after the official launch.
