Nintendo has officially unveiled the remake of the iconic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, confirming numerous rumors and expectations of Switch 2 owners. This was the first game in the series to offer fans a full three-dimensional experience, and it was a huge commercial success, selling over 7.6 million copies. Unlike previous remasters and re-releases, this time the fantasy adventure game is being created from scratch for the Nintendo Switch 2 console.

“The Nintendo 64 classic is coming back for a new generation in 2026, revived exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2,” the company said during the Direct presentation. Nintendo did not reveal many details about the project, except to confirm its existence, but a small teaser trailer was shown during the presentation.

The first half of the trailer tells the story of the kingdom of Hyrule, the Kokiri people living in the forest, and their fairy-tale companions against a tapestry. Then the audience is introduced to “one special boy” who doesn’t have a fairy, after which the camera switches to a sleeping Link, demonstrating, presumably, a new art style created for the remake. Unfortunately, neither the gameplay nor the game world itself has been shown yet.

The original game was released for the Nintendo 64 game console in 1998 and offered an adventure in which Link once again confronts the evil King Genondorf. Throughout the game, Link learned 12 melodies that allowed him to solve musical puzzles and move through space and time. The game, which was extremely warmly received by players on modern Nintendo consoles, was available only through a Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeThe remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 doesn’t have an exact release date yet, but Nintendo has announced that it will be released in 2026. Perhaps we will know more in September if the studio wants to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the series. Given that many publishers are now avoiding releasing their projects near the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, the company may follow this strategy and also decide to release the game by November this year.
