At one point, Apple wanted to “change the world” with new AI-powered gadgets, including AirPods Pro with built-in cameras. However, according to sources, the development of this potentially revolutionary product has once again run into the company’s main problem in recent years – falling behind its competitors in the field of AI.

The first reports that Apple was working on new AirPods Pro with cameras surfaced back in February. But as early as July 2025, the company was granted a patent for using cameras similar to the Face ID projector to determine the distance to objects and perform 3D depth mapping, which opened up a wide range of possibilities for future AirPods Pro models.
In May, Bloomberg insider and journalist Mark Gurman revealed new details about the revolutionary device. According to him, the new AirPods Pro were already in the design validation phase, which is the final major stage before early production begins. He stated at the time that the AirPods Pro, equipped with cameras, were designed to continuously stream visual data to the new Siri, which would allow the updated voice assistant to better understand what was happening around it. Users would then be able to ask Siri questions about nearby objects, receive more accurate and personalized context-aware reminders, and get more detailed step-by-step directions for better navigation.

Of course, this approach would raise questions about security and privacy, and to “highlight” the process of transmitting visual information to Siri, the device was to feature a special LED indicator. Visually, the new AirPods Pro were reportedly supposed to resemble the AirPods Pro 3 but would have a longer stem to accommodate the cameras.
However, insider Kosutami – better known as a collector of Apple device prototypes – has effectively dashed expectations of a quick release of AirPods Pro with cameras, succinctly stating just one word: “suspended.”
Kosutami has a fairly good track record when it comes to leaks. In particular, about ten months before the presentation, he revealed information about the iPhone 16 Pro’s metal battery case. Although in August 2024, the insider mistakenly claimed that the release of the AirPods Pro 3 was imminent.
Previous leaks suggested that Apple planned to unveil all-new AirPods Pro with cameras earlier this year. However, the launch was postponed due to the company’s difficulties with AI development. Following the release of the new Siri and updated Visual Intelligence features, it was believed that the AirPods Pro with cameras project was once again nearing completion. However, following Kosutami’s latest statement, even these expectations may not come to fruition.
