This material was originally intended as a straightforward review of the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max. I am familiar with this system through direct use, including in conditions involving illness and power outages, where it proved more reliable than the River 3 Max. However, this will not be a simple review, as one particular observation became apparent during that experience.

EcoFlow Delta 3 Max

If power outages last longer than a day, even the Delta 3 Max is not sufficient in my case. In some areas, outages can last for several days or even weeks, and further disruptions during the summer appear likely. For this reason, in addition to discussing the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max itself, I will outline two practical approaches to managing extended outages – both with and without such a system. The presence of a unit like the Delta 3 Max simplifies the situation, but it does not fully eliminate the underlying constraints.

Market Position

Starting with pricing, the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max is the most expensive portable power station I have evaluated, with an approximate cost of $1,800. It should be noted from the outset that the Delta 3 Max differs significantly from the River 3 in many respects.

Limitations

One of the primary drawbacks is its size. The Delta 3 Max measures 494 × 239 × 305 mm, comparable to a mid-tower PC case, and weighs just over 20 kg. While the handle is well-designed and secure, the unit is not easily portable. In my case, after surgery, I was unable to move or pack it despite the otherwise practical design.

However, the number of notable drawbacks is limited. One additional point concerns operation: the station cannot automatically enable AC output under any conditions and requires manual activation. Unlike a UPS, where AC output remains continuously available, connected devices will not power on automatically when grid electricity is restored. This behavior should be taken into account.

EcoFlow Delta 3 Max Specifications

At the same time, it should be noted that the Delta 3 Max, like most recent EcoFlow power stations, supports a UPS mode, allowing automatic switching from grid power to battery operation.

The switching time is under 10 milliseconds. The unit also supports peak loads of up to 4800 W, 3200 W in X-Boost mode, and 2400 W under standard operation, which is sufficient for devices such as PCs, electric kettles, and even water heaters.

It should be clarified that automatic reactivation of AC output is not an inherent feature of a UPS mode. While it may be present in some implementations, it is not guaranteed. In practice, this functionality is uncommon in portable power stations, and I have not encountered models that support it directly.

Additional technical specifications include a total of nine output ports. There are four AC outlets, one USB-A port rated up to 18 W, and three USB-C ports – one supporting up to 100 W and two up to 30 W each. A 12 V car socket is also available, with a maximum output of 126 W. The battery capacity is 2048 Wh. It uses an LFP (LiFePO₄) battery with an integrated BMS, providing extended monitoring of operating parameters and overall condition.

On the input side, the Delta 3 Max supports up to 2300 W, allowing a full charge in approximately 68 minutes. Charging from solar panels is also supported via an integrated XT-60 connector, with input up to 500 W. The unit is compatible with a mobile application that provides a range of control and monitoring features. However, automatic activation of AC output is not available within the software.

EcoFlow Delta 3 Max

A few words on noise: like other third-generation EcoFlow units, the Delta 3 Max is relatively quiet. It is not silent, and fan noise increases with load, but the cooling system is clearly higher quality than generic low-cost designs. Examples can be seen in the video above.

It’s worth noting that, in addition to the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max, there is also the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max Plus. This model is slightly upgraded in several areas: it offers higher power output and includes additional software features, such as charging priority and X-Fusion, which allows the unit to pass through large amounts of power even while charging.

The main feature, however, is support for additional 4 + 8 kWh battery modules, which can significantly expand total capacity. These modules are compatible with the previous Delta 2 Max model and can increase overall storage up to 10 kWh.

However – even 10 kWh will eventually run out. It’s important that every watt-hour is used effectively and efficiently. With that in mind, here are my recommendations.

Passive Consumption

First, unplug devices when they are not in use, even if they appear to be turned off. Many electronics continue to draw power in standby mode. I noticed this when powering a studio with the River 3 Max: a charger plugged into the outlet, without any devices connected, consumed 3–4 W on its own.

BUT! This does not always happen. The 3–4 W draw occurs only when the station is running on its internal batteries and only if other devices are connected. While 3–4 W may seem small, if the station is delivering only around 20 W total, that’s up to 20% wasted energy. This is exactly why every watt-hour should be used wisely. Make sure to check whether this occurs in your setup.

General Preparation

Recommendation number two: prepare for the summer. Get a fan in advance – ideally a small USB-powered desktop model. Consider adding a solar panel as well; it doesn’t have to use the XT-60 connector or be integrated directly with the station, but having one will help extend autonomy.

Install mosquito screens on your windows so you can ventilate the space without being disturbed by insects at night. Get a water pitcher with a filter and keep at least one spare cartridge on hand.

Also, keep a supply of drinking water – not technical water – for at least a week. That’s roughly four 5-liter bottles per person, enough for tea, instant noodles, quick oatmeal, or anything similar. You can have as much technical water as you like, but drinking water should cover a full week per person.

Summary

It’s clear that I would recommend the EcoFlow Delta 3 Max if your budget allows. The third-generation stations are objectively the best the manufacturer has produced so far. While some features are still missing, most aspects have been improved. The key point, however, is not to rely solely on a single power station. Maintain backup options and alternatives, and – crucially – develop the skills and confidence to use them effectively. That is ultimately the most important factor.
