EcoFlow EB600 Review: A Solid Foundation for Energy Independence

EcoFlow has been steadily and deliberately expanding its reach across a wide range of audiences – whether by design or simply as a natural outcome of its product strategy. This time, we’re taking a look at the EcoFlow EB600, an expansion battery designed for the EcoFlow River 3 lineup. Strictly speaking, though, it’s not exactly a conventional expansion battery, nor is it compatible with every River 3 model. That distinction makes it all the more interesting – not necessarily better, but certainly more intriguing.

Price and Positioning

Here’s the interesting part. The EB600 follows the same concept as the EB300, which we’ve already reviewed on our channel. If you haven’t seen that review, the short version is this: the EB600 is essentially an EB300 with roughly twice the capacity, twice the physical size, twice the weight – and a higher price tag of around $300.

As a reminder, the EB300 was compatible with the EcoFlow River 3 lineup starting from the Max models, as the entry-level versions lack the required expansion connector. It also came bundled with the EcoFlow River 3 Plus. That’s because the River 3 Plus is essentially a River 3 Max paired with the EB300.

The EB300 offered – and still offers – a capacity of 286 Wh, a single 140 W USB-C port for both input and output, and a built-in battery level indicator. It measures 234 × 224 × 110 mm and weighs 3.5 kg, excluding the power station itself. So, what does the EcoFlow EB600 bring to the table? It doubles the capacity, adding 572 Wh of extra energy storage. It is also heavier, at 5.8 kg, and its enclosure is 48 mm taller. Otherwise, the specifications remain essentially unchanged, from the battery level indicator to the 140 W USB-C input/output port.

As a side note, that 140 W USB-C port could become particularly useful for gaming laptops in the future. Take my ASUS ProArt P16 as an example: when powered over USB-C, its GeForce RTX 5090 is limited to no more than 50 W. The difference between a 50 W and a 90 W RTX 5090 is substantial – close to a 90% increase in available GPU performance.

At the moment, however, I can’t point to a real-world scenario where this would be a decisive advantage. One possibility is laptops based on the RTX Spark platform, which could see a significant performance boost from an additional 40 W delivered over USB-C, as that’s essentially what they were designed to take advantage of. But that’s a topic I’ve already covered elsewhere.

But that’s not really the point. Comparing the EcoFlow EB600 to laptops misses the bigger picture. A more meaningful comparison is with desktop PCs, because the EcoFlow River 3 ecosystem is far more capable than it might appear at first glance – and it extends well beyond laptop use cases.

Customization

Let’s break it down step by step. We start with the power station itself. The base EcoFlow River 3 models are out of the equation, since they don’t include the connector required for an expansion battery. And yes, expansion battery support used to be reserved for premium product lines such as the Delta series. These days, though, even the Delta lineup has become more diverse, ranging all the way down to what are essentially oversized power banks.

The idea is simple: start with a mid-range EcoFlow River 3. Think of it like building a modern desktop PC without a discrete graphics card. And that’s not a bad place to begin – current desktop platforms are highly capable even without a dedicated GPU. I’ve previously reviewed the AMD Ryzen 5 7600, along with its integrated graphics. The iGPU is surprisingly capable, especially if your gaming library consists of titles that are a decade old. Personally, I still enjoy those games – and there are plenty of them.

The point is that, much like a pre-built AMD Ryzen system without a discrete graphics card, the EcoFlow River 3 lineup – starting with the River 3 Max – is an excellent foundation. It’s quieter than many competing power stations, highly portable, easy to use, and versatile enough for a wide range of applications.

Now, imagine that the EB300 or EB600 isn’t a graphics card. It’s RAM. It expands capacity rather than performance. I made a similar point in my ASUS ProArt PX13 GoPro Edition review: there are workloads where an integrated GPU isn’t the limiting factor, yet the larger pool of unified memory provides a clear advantage. The same principle applies here.

Capacity Options

If your goal is to power a 600 W refrigerator or a 1,200 W water heater – where X-Boost only applies to resistive heating appliances – it makes virtually no difference whether you’re using the power station on its own, with the EB300, or with the EB600. Output power remains the same. The situation changes when you need to power a low-consumption device for an extended period. Take a router and its fiber-optic modem, for example, with a combined power draw of around 20 W. In that scenario, the EB600 has a clear advantage over the EB300, effectively delivering close to twice the runtime and keeping your internet connection alive for nearly twice as long.

I say “nearly” because I’m factoring in the capacity of the power station itself. That base capacity remains the same at 286 Wh, since the lower-cost, lower-output River 3 models don’t support expansion batteries. The higher-end configurations differ only in the expansion battery they ship with.

In other words, the lineup consists of the EcoFlow River 3 Max, the River 3 Plus, and the River 3 Max Plus. You can think of them as three configurations: the power station on its own, the power station bundled with the EB300, and the power station bundled with the EB600. Beyond that, you move into the Delta series, which effectively serves as EcoFlow’s flagship product lineup.

More importantly, though, I haven’t even touched on the XT60 connector. That opens the door to an entire ecosystem of charging options, most notably solar panels with a combined input of up to 220 W. Reaching that level of solar input during the summer is much easier than you might expect, especially when using EcoFlow’s own solar panels, which we reviewed some time ago. Despite its age, that review remains just as relevant today.

Summary

Much like building a capable gaming PC, the EcoFlow ecosystem is all about starting with a solid foundation and expanding it with components that may not always be essential, but are consistently valuable. In that sense, the EcoFlow EB600 reminds me of having 128 GB of high-quality DDR5 memory. It won’t increase raw performance, but it does provide the extra capacity needed to maintain reliable operation in situations where processing power alone simply isn’t enough. And that’s the kind of advantage that’s genuinely hard to put a price on.
