Last September, Paramount Pictures and Activision announced some exciting news: the Call of Duty series is expanding beyond video games and will be adapted into a feature film. There are still nearly two years to go before the big-screen premiere, but more and more details about this project are emerging.

During the “Call of Duty in Culture” panel at Fanatics Fest in New York, Peter Berg, the director and co-screenwriter of the upcoming film, revealed that the movie’s story will take place in the Modern Warfare universe.
Since the game franchise launched in 2003, six main titles have been released as part of the Modern Warfare sub-series, and it was rebooted in 2019. In addition, a new installment, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, is expected to be released on PC and consoles in a few months. Among other possible options for the film adaptation, events set during World War II or a story set in the Black Ops universe were considered.

No further details about the plot of the upcoming film have been revealed yet. At the same time, it’s safe to assume that the film will be packed with large-scale combat scenes and explosions. It may also feature one of the series’ most famous characters – Captain John Price – who will likely lead the legendary international special operations unit, Task Force 141. He may be joined by Lieutenant Simon “Ghost” Riley and Sergeant Johnny “Soap” McTavish.
Taylor Sheridan is working on the film’s screenplay alongside Peter Berg, known for the films Friday Night Lights, Lone Survivor, and Hancock, is also being co-written by Taylor Sheridan. His credits include projects such as Hell or High Water, Yellowstone, and Sicario.
“We are approaching the creation of this film with the same disciplined and uncompromising dedication to excellence that guided our work on ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ to ensure that it meets the exceptionally high standards that this franchise and its fans deserve,” Paramount Chairman and CEO David Ellison said earlier, adding that it is a great honor for the company to have the opportunity to bring this universe to the big screen.
Paramount Pictures plans to release the Call of Duty movie in theaters on June 30, 2028. The film’s official title has not yet been announced, though it is possible that it will ultimately be released simply as Modern Warfare.
