The Goodwood Festival of Speed took place in the UK recently, and BYD brought many cars to the event, including the new Denza Z electric supercar. Although it costs nearly $200,000, it is still significantly cheaper and faster than the Porsche 911 Turbo S.

It debuted at the Beijing Auto Show in April, and at that time, BYD stated that the Denza Z “marks a watershed moment for the global auto industry.” It appears that the subbrand is set to compete directly with leading European premium automakers, including Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

The company says the Denza Z is the “the world’s first intelligent supercar,” offering “shattering high performance,” five-minute Flash Charging, and the company’s latest technological innovations.

The automaker announced that the electric supercar is built on the BYD e3 platform, which was the first in China to feature a steer-by-wire control system developed entirely in-house. It improves handling, control, and efficiency. The electric car will be available in three versions: Coupe, Spider, and Racing.

All models are equipped with three electric motors – one in the front and two in the rear – which together deliver 1,582 k.s. In the Racing version, the car can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 1.96 seconds, and its top speed is 349 km/h. The Coupe version accelerates to 100 km/h in 2.25 seconds, while the Spider version does so in approximately 2.3 seconds.

All versions are also equipped with a BYD Blade Battery 2.0 with a capacity of 76 kWh. The Coupe’s WLTP-rated range is 410 km, while the Spider and Racing models offer 400 km and 380 km, respectively, under the WLTP cycle. Thanks to its 800-volt architecture and proprietary Flash Charging system, the Denza Z can be charged from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. The electric sports car is also equipped with BYD’s Disus-M intelligent suspension, which allows it to absorb bumps, jump over them, or even “dance.”

The Denza Z is 4,780 mm long, 1,990 mm wide, 1,350 mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,780 mm. This makes the car slightly larger than a Porsche 911 and roughly the same size as a Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe. But the BYD electric car is significantly more powerful than both of its competitors. For comparison, the Porsche 911 Turbo S produces up to 701 k.s., while the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe produces up to 1,153 k.s.

The Denza Z’s interior features BYD’s latest software and technologies. The digital dashboard includes an 8.8-inch driver display and a 12.8-inch infotainment screen with integrated Google services. The car is also equipped with an audio system featuring 12 speakers in the Coupe and Racing versions and 10 speakers in the Spider.

In the UK, prices for the Denza Z Coupe start at £142,900 ($192,000), for the Spider at £159,900 ($215,000), and the Racing at £172,900 ($232,000). Sales will begin in late summer, coinciding with the opening of the first Denza brand stores. BYD plans to begin deliveries to customers by the end of 2026. In China, pre-orders have already begun, and the starting price is just 680,000 yuan (about $100,000), which is roughly half the price in the UK. It is also available in three versions there.
