The new BYD Dolphin G, which the company has developed specifically for the global market, will soon go on sale. The automaker said that its “revolutionary” plug-in hybrid system will provide a range of more than 1000 km at an affordable price. BYD is actively promoting its Super Hybrid (DM-i) technology to international markets to keep up this year’s growth momentum. After overtaking Tesla, Kia and other brands, BYD became the best-selling electric vehicle brand in the UK, Australia and several other international markets in Q1 2026.

Amid fierce price competition in China, BYD and several other Chinese automakers are trying to gain a foothold overseas to boost sales. As the company said after the presentation of the compact PHEV hatchback, Dolphin G is the first BYD vehicle designed specifically for international markets, including Europe. According to BYD Executive Vice President Stella Lee, the B segment remains “one of the most important”.
“By combining a long electric range, intelligent hybrid technology and advanced digital features in an affordable compact car, we are making sustainable mobility smarter, more practical and more accessible to many more people across Europe,” she said.

The car is 4160 mm long and 1825 mm wide. It is similar in size to the Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Yaris. BYD said that the Dolphin G will enter the European market in the coming weeks, with the first deliveries starting by the end of summer, and its detailed specifications and prices will be revealed closer to the launch. But, according to Autocar, the car can cost from about $27 thousand.

The Dolphin G is likely to use the same PHEV system as the Atto 2 DM-i. It combines a 1.5-liter engine that works as a generator and a front-mounted electric motor with a capacity of 194 hp (145 kW). The model is expected to be available with two LFP battery options: 7.8 kWh and 18 kWh. BYD said they will provide a combined range of more than 1000 km on the WLTP cycle.

The compact PHEV will be, so to speak, a relative of the Dolphin Surf, BYD’s smallest and most affordable electric vehicle sold in the UK, Europe, and other markets. In China, this model is sold under the name Seagull and is one of BYD’s best-selling vehicles.
