Xiaomi has introduced new power banks that already comply with the most stringent GB47372-2026 safety standard for external batteries in China. It came into force only on April 3, but the brand did not hesitate and immediately announced six models of power banks that meet the new requirements. One of them is even already available for sale. The full implementation of the standard is scheduled for April 2027, so Xiaomi is about a year ahead of the deadline.

The requirements of GB47372-2026 are extremely strict. In particular, they include testing by piercing the cells – the battery should not catch fire or explode even in the event of physical damage. Thermal resistance tests are also conducted at elevated temperatures and for a long time. Drop, compression, short circuit, and overcurrent protection tests are mandatory. Analysts estimate that about 70% of the current production capacity in the power bank segment will not be able to meet these standards.

Entering the market with devices that meet the new requirements even before the official deadline is not just an image-building move for Xiaomi. It shows that the company’s battery supply chain has already been brought to a similar level of safety, and also gives it the opportunity to strengthen its market position, especially against the backdrop of budget brands that may not be able to cope with the new requirements.

Most power banks usually remain a “surprise box” for the user: they simply charge devices, but the real state of the battery remains unknown. The new standard changes this approach.

Xiaomi 2026 devices will be able to receive detailed information about the battery status via a wired connection to a computer. Users will be able to view the number of charging cycles, the overall level of wear and tear, and recorded anomalies. In addition, the device itself has a recommended service life of five years. This level of transparency has long been the norm for laptop batteries, but it’s a novelty for portable chargers.

The lineup of models is still being revealed gradually. Five of the six power banks are equipped with built-in cables, which is a practical solution and avoids compatibility issues. The sixth model will be ultra-thin and is expected to continue the development of the Jinshajiang series, which has already brought the form factor to the most compact possible.

Given that the mandatory implementation of the standard is still a year away, Xiaomi has an advantage in terms of time and production scale. At the same time, smaller brands that are just trying to adapt may face difficulties due to costs and time constraints.
