This article is a fairly comprehensive look at power supplies – specifically, why some models come with warranties of 10 years or more, and whether they can truly be considered “immortal.” Not in the sense that they could survive being submerged in cola or poked with a fork, but in terms of their long-term reliability. As an example, we’ll look at the new be quiet! Dark Power 14 1200W, which is currently one of the most powerful units in the company’s lineup.

Positioning and Price

The unit is not inexpensive, costing nearly $350. It’s important to note that this is not the Dark Power PRO version. While the power output is similar to the previous Pro models, the price is lower. Interestingly, this standard version may appeal even to users who were primarily interested in the flagship models of past years.

Key features of be quiet! Dark Power 14 1200W

To make it interesting for both you and me, I’ll go into detail about the standout features of this PSU. As for cable lengths, connector layout, or dimensions, I’ll go over those quickly and mostly through illustrations. I’ll also show the design – and I can add that it fits perfectly with be quiet!’s flagship PSUs, especially the radiator grille. Honestly, 10 out of 9, no complaints.

Now, something I noticed that I didn’t expect. First, there are two additional switches on the back of the unit. The first is an overclocking switch, which changes the operation mode of the 12 V rail between single and multi configurations.

This could be the subject of a separate, more detailed analysis, but the key point is that the switch is present. It is relatively uncommon, as most power supplies are either single-rail or multi-rail. The be quiet! Dark Power 14 1200W allows switching between the two modes.

The second switch controls the fan operation, and it works in a somewhat nuanced way. In standard mode, the fan runs continuously, while in “silent” mode, the fan can stop at low loads.

Even at minimal load, the fan will continue running for 2 to 5 minutes to avoid abrupt starts and stops, which can be noticeable. In practical terms, at low loads – specifically below 60–70% – the fans in the Dark Power 14 units do not operate at all, effectively making the power supply semi-passive.

Additionally, the unit does not have a C19 connector, but it does include a C13. This is more significant than it might seem. It appears that be quiet! only produced a single generation of power supplies with a C19 connector, and there are no plans for more. I had assumed that C19 would only appear on units rated at 1 kW or higher, but in this case, the unit exceeds 1 kW.

This is notable because, as a reminder, C13 connectors are far more common than C19. I have five C13 cables myself. Much of the computer equipment I work with – from laptops to monitors – uses C13 for power. I haven’t encountered a C19 connector since reviewing the be quiet! Straight Power 12 1200W. For that reason, having C13 here is convenient.

Durability

Now, regarding durability. The be quiet! Dark Power 14 1200W features 80 Plus Titanium and Cybenetics Titanium efficiency ratings. At 50% load, this translates to an efficiency of 94% according to 80 Plus, and between 91% and 93% according to Cybenetics.

It should be noted that according to the latest Cybenetics standards, there is also a Cybenetics Diamond rating, which represents efficiency above 93% – not equal to, but exceeding it. Currently, there are no power supplies listed with this certification on the organization’s website. For this reason, Titanium is considered the highest practical standard.

What does this actually mean? The power supply receives 220 V, 230 V, or 110 V input and converts it to 5 V, 12 V, or 3.3 V output, while approximately 6% of the energy is lost as heat in the surrounding air at 50% load. This indicates that the be quiet! Dark Power 14 1200W contains highly reliable, well-optimized components that are necessary to achieve this level of efficiency.

This is aside from the Japanese capacitors rated for 105 °C, the Full Bridge + Synchronous Rectifier + LLC topology, and compliance with PCIe 5.0 and ATX 3.1 standards. Notably, the unit includes two ATX 12V High Power cables.

Personal Recommendation

That said, I would not suggest using the Dark Power 14 1200W to power two high-end cards, such as dual RTX 5090s. In my view, the ideal use case for this power supply is in an extremely reliable workstation, for example, a rendering PC equipped with an NVIDIA RTX Pro 5000 or a future gaming card that requires two 12V High Power connections.

The key point is to load the power supply at around 50% in a stable and balanced manner. Whether you’re gaming, rendering, or training AI models, this is where it performs optimally. In conclusion, buying the be quiet! Dark Power 14 1200W just to leave it idle would not be practical.

Conclusions

Although this unit can operate in semi-passive mode, its main advantage is its high efficiency under load. Few power supplies can compete with it in a build aimed at maximum reliability and performance, whether for gaming or professional work. This is particularly notable considering the price: the be quiet! Dark Power 14 1200W is not marketed as a flagship model, yet it performs at a level comparable to both previous flagship units and current competitors.
