Price and positioning

Nubia NEO 3 GT

The Nubia NEO 3 GT firmly positions itself in the budget gaming smartphone niche. And for mobile gaming, it’s loaded with goodies:

  • touch triggers on the right side of the device, turning it into a kind of mobile console
    liquid cooling
  • a gaming space where you can customise all processes so that nothing distracts you from your leisure time
  • AI technologies to optimise device performance
  • as well as bypass charging, which allows you to power the device while gaming without draining the battery.

At the time of writing, the Nubia Neo 3 GT is available for $275 or €235. You have to admit, that’s quite affordable for this class of device. But, of course, it’s interesting to see how it all works in practice and whether the new device’s ‘narrow profile’ will get in the way of everyday use.

What’s in the box

Nubia NEO 3 GT

The Nubia Neo 3 GT comes with a fairly complete set of accessories. Inside the bright yellow box are the phone itself with a pre-applied screen protector, an 80W charger, a cable, documentation, a SIM tray tool, and a case. The case is a matte, transparent plastic cover that protects the back and top edges of the device while leaving the sides exposed.

As a starter option, the included case is serviceable, but it feels more like a temporary solution. Its build quality is basic and doesn’t inspire much confidence in terms of durability. The matte finish also softens the look of the Neo 3 GT’s back panel, which otherwise has a fairly distinctive design. A fully transparent or solid-colored case would likely complement the phone’s aesthetics better. Still, it’s useful to have something in the box from day one, and replacing it with a sturdier option later on is always possible.

Design, materials and layout of elements

The Nubia Neo 3 GT has a bold, futuristic design that leans into the typical gaming aesthetic. The unit I tested features a bright yellow back with decorative accents, though the phone is also available in a more understated black variant.

Nubia NEO 3 GT

Every design element of the Nubia Neo 3 GT emphasizes its gaming focus. Straight lines, decorative “fasteners,” and even a light-up panel that activates during gaming or charging all contribute to the theme. The camera and flash modules follow the same approach, using octagonal shapes instead of the usual circles. Branding and some technical details are also printed along the right edge. Overall, the design is eye-catching and geared toward users who prefer devices that stand out from the typical smartphone crowd.

Nubia NEO 3 GT

On the front, the Nubia Neo 3 GT features a 6.8-inch display with slim, evenly sized bezels – something not always common in this category. The selfie camera sits in a punch-hole cutout, while a small grille above it houses the earpiece, which also doubles as a secondary speaker. The screen comes with a factory-applied protective film right out of the box.

Nubia NEO 3 GT

Looking at the controls, the left side of the phone is kept clean, while the right side houses the usual trio of buttons: a volume rocker and a power button, which is highlighted in red. Additionally, there are two small touch-sensitive pads at the top and bottom that function as triggers in certain games. It’s an interesting feature, and worth exploring in more detail.

The top edge of the Neo 3 GT is mostly empty, featuring only an extra microphone hole. At the bottom, you’ll find the main speaker, primary microphone, USB-C charging port, and the SIM card slot. There’s no 3.5mm headphone jack, so you’ll need to rely on Bluetooth headphones.

The Neo 3 GT has an all-plastic body, with smooth matte edges and a slightly textured back panel. The build quality feels solid, with tight seams and a reliable overall fit. It also comes with an IP54 rating, which isn’t top-tier but provides basic protection against dust and splashes – a practical bonus for everyday use.

Ergonomics

In daily use, the Nubia Neo 3 GT is reasonably comfortable, considering its 6.8-inch display. Measuring 163.3 × 77.2 × 8.2 mm and weighing 203 g, it actually feels lighter in hand. The straight edges provide a secure grip, and during testing, I mostly used the phone without a case without feeling like it might slip. The power button is well-placed for easy access with the thumb. One-handed use is naturally limited due to the size, but a one-handed mode is available, along with a floating assistant that gives quick access to frequently used functions and apps.

The fingerprint scanner is integrated into the display, though in my view, it sits a bit low. Raising it by about a centimeter would make it feel more natural to reach. That said, this placement is typical for most modern phones with optical in-screen sensors, so it’s not really a major drawback.

Nubia Neo 3 GT display

The Nubia Neo 3 GT features a 6.8-inch OLED display with FHD+ resolution (2392×1080) and a pixel density of 386 ppi. It supports refresh rates up to 120 Hz, with selectable modes of 60 Hz, 90 Hz, 120 Hz, and an automatic setting that adjusts the rate based on the content. This helps balance battery consumption, reducing refresh rate where high speed isn’t necessary while still delivering a smooth experience for gaming and multimedia.

The display settings offer a range of options. You can enable dark mode, reading mode (which shifts the screen to soft gray tones), or night mode (which warms the display to reduce blue light). The color temperature can be adjusted in standard mode, and there are the usual features like auto-brightness, screen timeout, a function that keeps the screen on while you’re looking at it, and other standard options.

The Neo 3 GT also includes customization options, from interface themes and animation speeds to settings for the LED panel on the back of the phone. This panel can be activated for various events, such as gaming, charging, alarms, incoming calls, or notifications. Users can choose the lighting style – steady, blinking, pulsing, etc. – and select one of five colors for the digits above the panel: red, green, blue, yellow, or purple.

Nubia NEO 3 GT

Focusing on the display itself, the Neo 3 GT delivers strong performance, which is essential for a gaming device. Viewing angles are wide, contrast is high thanks to the OLED panel, and blacks are truly deep. The brightness range is extensive – though the maximum brightness can feel excessive indoors, it’s useful for outdoor use in sunlight. The interface also feels smooth and responsive. Overall, the screen is well-suited not only for gaming and media but also for everyday tasks like messaging, browsing, and app use.

Performance and wireless connectivity

Nubia NEO 3 GT

The Nubia Neo 3 GT is powered by an 8-core Unisoc T9100 chipset built on a 6nm process. It combines four Cortex-A55 cores at 2.2 GHz with four more powerful Cortex-A76 cores up to 2.7 GHz, while graphics are handled by an ARM Mali-G57 MP4 GPU. The phone comes in a single configuration with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. There’s no microSD support, but up to 12 GB of virtual RAM can be allocated from the internal storage.

Nubia NEO 3 GT

The Neo 3 GT offers a full set of wireless connectivity options, including Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and location services. A notable addition is the liquid cooling system, which helps manage heat during extended gaming sessions, along with the NeoTurbo engine that uses AI technologies to optimize performance across different use cases.

In practice, the Neo 3 GT performs well under both everyday tasks and gaming. While I’m not a hardcore gamer, I tried a session of Asphalt 9 to see how the phone handled it. The device stayed cool for the most part, only warming slightly near the camera module. It was also a good opportunity to test the touch-sensitive triggers on the right edge, which align naturally with the index fingers when holding the phone in landscape orientation.

Nubia NEO 3 GT

The gaming experience on the Neo 3 GT is engaging, and frequent mobile gamers are unlikely to be disappointed. The triggers are responsive, providing more precise control across different game genres, which can make progressing through levels easier. Everyday use and multitasking are also smooth and reliable, even without activating virtual RAM expansion. For those interested in benchmark results, some of the most common tests are provided below.

Software

The Nubia Neo 3 GT runs on Android 15 with the company’s MyOS 15 interface layered on top. It includes features designed to enhance gaming, such as a Game Space and a memory cleaner. There’s also a RedMagic hub for connecting various brand accessories, including headphones, gamepads, and cooling devices. Some pre-installed apps, like Booking and a few games, come with the phone, but they can be easily uninstalled.

However, there are two folders – More Games and More Apps – embedded on the home screen as widgets that cannot be removed. This can be a bit frustrating, as the app suggestions they display seem random and cannot be manually adjusted.

The settings menu itself is straightforward and uncluttered, but there are some additional features. Nubia AI includes tools like AI Translate for real-time translation and Smart 5G for intelligent network switching. There are also controls for the LED panel on the phone’s back and a “Live Island” feature, which activates an informational display around the selfie camera during music playback, voice recording, headphone use, or phone calls.

Unlocking methods

The Neo 3 GT offers two standard methods for user recognition: a fingerprint scanner and facial recognition. The fingerprint sensor is optical and integrated into the display, performing quickly, accurately, and consistently without any false readings during testing. The only minor critique is that it could be positioned slightly higher for improved ergonomics.

Nubia NEO 3 GT

Facial recognition on the Neo 3 GT also works well and is usually slightly faster than the fingerprint scanner, though the difference is barely noticeable. In daylight, it’s accurate, and in low light, a brief brightness boost helps with recognition. This feature is implemented thoughtfully: the brightness increases smoothly without reaching maximum, and instead of a plain white screen, the phone uses the lock screen wallpaper. This allows for comfortable use in the dark without a harsh “spotlight” effect. The feature can be disabled if preferred, in which case the fingerprint scanner serves as the primary unlock method.

Nubia Neo 3 GT sound

The Nubia Neo 3 GT is marketed with stereo sound, but in practice, it’s more limited than it sounds on paper. The stereo effect comes from the main bottom speaker and the earpiece speaker. As is common in setups like this, the bottom speaker is louder and fuller, while the top one mainly provides support. When holding the phone in landscape orientation, there’s a noticeable imbalance toward the main speaker. Gripping the phone for gaming can partially block the bottom speaker, leaving the top one to carry most of the sound.

Nubia NEO 3 GT

In landscape mode, the stereo effect is limited, so using headphones – wireless, since there’s no 3.5mm jack – is a better option. However, stereo works reasonably well in portrait orientation, such as when watching short videos or making video calls, with the top speaker providing a noticeable boost to the overall sound.

Cameras

The rear camera setup on the Nubia Neo 3 GT is essentially a single 50 MP module with an f/1.8 aperture, assisted by a 2 MP telephoto sensor. Video can be recorded in both Full HD and 4K, but only at 30 fps. There’s no optical stabilization; instead, software-based stabilization is used.

Nubia NEO 3 GT

The camera app offers standard modes like AI Cam (default), Pro, Sports (with unclear purpose), Night, and Portrait. Video recording is handled through the regular Video mode. There’s also a Mode section that provides additional tools for both photos and videos, including Full Size (full 50 MP), Document, Panorama, Multi-Exposure, Monochrome, Slow Motion, Multi-Camera (recording from both front and rear cameras simultaneously), and Vlog with various effects. Additional features include filters, automatic beauty enhancements (optional), a QR code scanner, Google Lens integration, and an AI mode for automatic photo optimization.

Interestingly, the AI Cam photo mode takes a slightly unconventional approach. Instead of the usual numeric zoom indicators (0.6x, 1x, 2x, 3x, etc.), it uses lens equivalents: 27 mm (main), 35 mm (street), 50 mm (standard), and even 81 mm (telephoto). It’s a creative touch and relatively easy to get used to, even if, like me, you’re not familiar with camera lenses. Here’s how it works in practice (all photos taken from the same position):

So how does the Nubia Neo 3 GT camera perform in practice? I tested it without AI enhancements, and in daylight the results are solid, with good sharpness, detail, and depth. Close-up shots in good lighting also look pleasing. Low-light performance, however, is weaker: detail drops noticeably in the evening. Night mode improves things slightly, reducing blur and softening a bit, but the improvement isn’t as pronounced as on some other smartphones. Below are a few examples, with standard mode on the left and night mode on the right.

A few more photos taken under different lighting conditions in normal mode (27 mm).

And here are some examples of photos with zoom.

ALL PHOTOS IN ORIGINAL RESOLUTION

The front-facing camera is 16 MP and simpler compared to the rear setup. Video recording is limited to Full HD at 30 fps, and the main modes are AI Cam (without AI enhancements), Portrait, and Video. Despite its basic nature, the camera produces reasonably good selfies and video, making it suitable for video calls as well. Overall, images are fairly sharp and detailed, with optional filters and basic beauty enhancements for those who use them.

Battery life

Nubia NEO 3 GT

The Nubia Neo 3 GT is equipped with a 6000 mAh battery and supports 80W fast charging. The box includes a full charger, which is a notable plus in 2025 given the cost of high-wattage chargers and cables. I wasn’t able to complete PCMark battery tests – the benchmark consistently stopped around the midpoint – but with this capacity, the phone should easily handle a full day of heavy use. It’s unlikely to last a full day of nonstop gaming, but fast charging mitigates that limitation. The device also supports bypass charging, allowing it to draw power directly while bypassing the battery. This reduces heat during intense gaming sessions and lessens strain on the battery, potentially extending its lifespan.

Conclusions and competitors

Nubia NEO 3 GT

Overall, the Nubia Neo 3 GT is a well-rounded smartphone for mobile gaming – and general use – offered at a fairly accessible price. It stands out with its bold gaming-oriented design and interface, a high-quality 120 Hz OLED display, solid performance enhanced by AI features, large battery capacity with 80W fast charging, and a range of gaming-focused features, from touch-sensitive triggers and liquid cooling to a dedicated Game Space. The cameras are generally capable but less suited for low-light photography. The software could be cleaner, and stereo sound more pronounced. Still, given the price, these minor drawbacks don’t overshadow the phone’s overall strengths.

The budget gaming smartphone segment is actually quite limited, as prices for these devices are usually higher. A couple of alternatives do exist. One is the younger Nubia Neo 3, which is simpler – it has an IPS display, less powerful hardware, and 33W charging – but comes at roughly two-thirds the price of the Neo 3 GT.

Another option is the Infinix GT 30 Pro. It’s more expensive, but offers several advantages: a 144 Hz display with 2720×1224 resolution, a more powerful processor, a 108 + 8 MP main camera, an IR port, Hi-Res Audio support, and both wireless and reverse charging. The trade-off is a slightly smaller battery and lower charging speed.
